Losi 8ight brushless buggy
 

Hi guys. I have a question regarding the latest Losi 8ight 2.0 brushless buggy, and I was hoping somebody might be able to offer me some information. I'm pretty impressed with the Losi 8ight. I had considerded buying a nitro version at one point in time, but this new brushless version looks rather interesting to me. I'm normally more of a nitro guy, but I do run plenty of electrics (not for speed), but I have been wondering if it is possible to run the Losi 8ight with NiMh cells. Would two 6 cell packs or one custom 12 to 14 cell pack fit the battery tray? I realize the brushless system may not be able to be used to it's full potential, but I don't feel like investing in the LiPo packs right now. What are your thoughts on this idea? Crazy? Not worth trying? Aside from the weight and fitting of some NiMh cells, I don't see why it wouldn't work, with a bit less performance, perhaps. Or would I be in danger of burning up the cells? Adivce and thoughts, glady accepted.

the only time i tried running sub-c packs in one of my brushless buggys i ended up destroying both packs and a battery tray in less than 5min and it was only geared for 30mph

Do you already have the NiMh batteries? These days you can find lower-end Lipo packs that will still outperform NiMh by a long shot for only a bit more than a good NiMh pack.

Yes, I already have NiMh battery packs. To be honest, I'm just not ready for LiPo packs yet.

So Semi Pro, I take it you destroyed the packs because of the jumping, and not so much because of excessive current draw?

Beside performance, Ni battery's weight could be a big problem. two 6S 4600mAh pack will weight about 1kg, it's really tough or even impossible to maintain left-right balance on the 8ight, unless you get something else like the Caster EX-1 having batt packs on both sides.

The 8ight battery tray sits much closer to the center of the chassis than the motor so you should be ok. You also won't need to worry about performance issues since top speed may be relatively slow.

i havent seen anyone with a balanced 8ight yet, your batterys would have to be around 375 grams and that limmits you to a small 4 cell or 3 cell set up

Interesting. Thanks for the information. I'm not sure what to do. I will not be buying LiPos anytime soon, so I just have to decide if I can live with the unbalanced and slower 8ight.
