Racing 1/8 Buggy on 3s
Does anyone race their 1/8 buggy on 3s? If so, what capacity packs, motor and general run time are you seeing? My friend and i were discussing setups and he asked why I am running 4s. He said it looks like I have a lot of wheelspin on our dusty track and was wondering if the 3s setup would help. Sorry if this has been discussed before. Since I am now shopping for a new motor, I was thinking now may be the time to try something new.

I'm running a Jammin X1 conversion, 2650 MMM combo, on 3s 4900 rhino's, 16/48 gearing. I get 12 minutes of track time with this setup. All I need is 10 minutes.
|
I would need 15min for race and probably an extra minute or two for warmup and waiting for the nitro guys who flame out, lol! What speed/rpm do you target?
|
It can be done on 3s but I would highly recommend at least 4s. On 3s everything will run pretty hot if you want to keep up with the other guys. You'll get more runtime for a given capacity on 4s too...
|
It also depends on your track configuration. I race on a small tigh track, only one straightaway worth full throttle. I chose 3s in order to shed some weight. It does get a little hot towards the end of the race but she's ok. And all we run are 10 minute mains.
Now if my track was a little bigger, I would definitely spring for the 4s setup. This setup would be more efficient if geared for the same 42mph(12/48 in my setup). This would still provide great speeds but also longer runtimes. What packs are you running? |
Right now I am running 4s 5000mAh Neu packs. It is just that our track gets so dusty at times I am trying to figure out if the lower power setup would be beneficial.
|
What tires are you running? In real dusty situations, it would help to run a larger stud like CrimeFighters. You may just want to turn the throttle EPA down to 80% or some % and give that a try before going buy new packs and pinions.
|
We usually run crimefighters, bowties or "Bowfighters" -- crime in the front, bows on the rear.

i raced my lightning LSP truggy with the novak 6.5 hv on a 3 cell 8000mah pack
it was just a cobbled together truck, but it worked out well |

Neu 1515/1.5D/F MMM NeuEnergy 5000mAh 11.1 14 or 15t pinion get about 15-18 minutes runtime |

pumpkinfish: I timed my practiced yesterday. I ran 16/48 with the MMM2650 in my Jammin X1 buggy on 3s 4900 Rhino 20C packs. Continuous track running yielded right under 13 minutes before the LVC on the MMM hit. I'll try to get a video soon. I have plenty enough top speed for my track. I'm looking into dropping down the pinion to either a 14T or 15T. That should yield more run time as well. |

I find them to be pretty good. I've got a bunch of cycles on them. Good runtimes, good punch.
Con: I find one of my packs are starting to discharge unequally now for some reason. Otherwise they are nice for the price. These are the same packs the "round" used to take his E-Revo to 76.7mph, he's a member on the Traxxas forum. I bought these from him. |
