5th scale savage project
Ok, heres another large scale project. Yes, I already have the baja 5b brushless project, and another large scale project that I will not be unveiling till it is done...
But back to this, a 3rd project that should be reasonably interesting. Basically going to build a long chassis for savage front and rear assemblies. I plan to use a flux single speed tranny, with a flux motor mount and a neu 1527. I already have the body, it is the proline desert rat 5t body: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXWKP5&P=ML So the plan is to use a custom rc alloy's front center driveshaft, and a savage xl rear driveshaft to span between the flux tranny and the diffs. I have the rc alloys shaft and need to determine if the xl rear shaft will work with this body. Measurements were made with the hpi 5t body, which has a slightly different wheelbase. So we will see what the mockup shows. Battery placement will be in front of the tranny for proper weight distribution. The motor and esc will sit behind the tranny as in the flux. Now, of course this is inspired by HPI japan's savage 5t, no doubt about that. Since I do not plan to buy 24mm hexes and 5t wheels/tires, I will use some proline 23mm 40 series beadlocks and some sort of 40 series tires. I plan to narrow the beadlocks, and most likely narrow the tires too, most likely to something similar to the width of the std MT tire (such as a badland tire). This should be closer to the width of the Baja 5t tires, and maintain the scale-ish corr truck look. I do not plan for this to be very heavy, maybe around 13-14lbs complete. So I think that I can get away with a single 1527 2y motor, and 12s lipo, both of which I have. I do not think that I will need a multi speed tranny, but mech brakes may be a requirement. So that means that I will not have reverse... I will gear it for around 40mph. So here is the part that I need you guys to chime in on. What esc should I use? It needs to be able to handle 12s lipo, and the various demands a wheeled vehicle will place on it. I figure something that can handle 100amps cont should do, and burst needs to be about 200amps? And cheap or used would be preferable, as always. If the CC guys want to "loan" me a 12s Mega Monster Max (if you use that name I expect a little recognition Patrick, or a least a few test units!) I will not complain! I will get some pics up of the body and other parts tomorrow at work (today?)... |
Yet ANOTHER Savage project? I see you are using those f/r assemblies. Does that mean you are forgetting the first extended Savage?
As far as the esc --- plane esc? wish i could be more help Linc. especially after you helped me with my Savage so much. There was that one i was talking to you about. The 12s capable 100HV. On hobbycity. Pictures ASAP, should be a sweet build. |

I am a bit sceptical of a air esc, I do not think the burst rating will be enough. I went with a dual motor setup in the baja 5b conversion mainly because of this. Hopefully Luciano will chime in with some sort of gangsta esc he had made... |
Plugged some info into the calc:
Differential Ratio: 3.3076923076923075 Transmission Ratio: 2.215277777777778 Spur Tooth Count: 47 Pinion Tooth Count: 25 Total Voltage: 44.4 Motor KV: 625 Tire Diameter (inches): 6.5 Spur/Pinion Ratio: 1.88 : 1 Total Ratio: 13.77562 : 1 Tire Circumference (inches): 20.42 inches (518.68 mm) Total Motor Speed: 27750 RPM Vehicle Speed: 38.95 mph (62.57 km/h) |
gangsta seems to be your favorite word lately. cant wait to see the savage completed. Shoot me a pm if you have any interest in a set of 1 run Savage xl tires
|
Yes, I am quite gangsta myself....
Anyways, looks like I will definitely need a xl rear driveshaft, the std x/flux rear driveshaft is a bit short... So I will have a look for a good deal on ebay! I also plan to build some sort of cage to protect the body. Not sure if I should just weld some brake tube up, or try may hand at using nylon rod? I have a feeling the brake tube will hold up better, but it will add weight up top, which is really not desirable... Given the thickness of the body, it really needs something to support the top in the center, especially when the truck rolls over. Maybe a couple of roll hoops, that are attached to each other, and a pair of outriggers on the side between the wheels to hold the sides of the body. I may even put some high density foam on the sides for a little cushion (similar to the front bumper material on touring cars.). |
I don't see any pics linc!

Ok, heres a few pics. The chassis shown has one flux tvp, and you can see it is a bit short with the front axle lined up with the center of the front wheel well. You can also see the "gangsta" custom shaft from rcalloys! "Very Nice, I like!" It is much better than my sister, who is #4 prostitute in all of Kazakhstan!
And the last pic shows the 1527 compared to a cc/neu 2200. It was in a ducted fan jet that routinely went past 150 mph! Zing! That is a 2y motor with 8mm shaft and m4 threads. Beastly! http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/b...p/DSCF3367.jpg http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/b...p/DSCF3368.jpg http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/b...p/DSCF3369.jpg http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/b...p/DSCF3370.jpg And if you look carefully you can see Donald Duck's ass. |
