endbell covers for hand wound neus

i'm running an 1/8 onroad conversion and am about to drop a 1515 1Y in it. i've got it geared fairly high, and i usually cover the endbells but for this one, i was thinking maybe i should just leave it open for added cooling.

is this a bad idea? is it ok to run them open? am i posing any risks to the motor?

any advise is appreciated.

Just that dirt/dust can get into the motor. And since there is little clearance between the coils and rotor, you could scratch them up.

is that something that could hurt the motor?

Well, if a big enough rock gets in there, it could jam the rotor and/or tear the coils apart. That's probably a worst-case scenario, but it's a possibility.
