HV Savage conversion

Hey Guys! I've been thinking how cool it would be to have a BL Savage. I have a roller right now because I sold all the old nitro crap. I am going to make it a HV setup using 8s lipo and an outrunner for a DD setup. I will be using a 80a plane ebay esc and a PiStix adapter, I am going to need suggestions on stuff like the motor mount and some kind of brake setup.

I'm short on money, so I am getting a $24 esc to start with. Its made by RC Hobbies and can do up to 8s lipo.:yipi: Its also OPTO so I'm going to need a BEC. A BEC from RC Hobbies that can do up to 8s lipo is only $5.50. And then All I need is a PiStix adapter which are $18. So for the esc I am spending a total of about $47.50.:mdr:

The motor is coming from HobbyCity. Its a Turnigy 50-65 270 kv. Its got a 8mm shaft so I can use RCM 8mm outerdrives. I think it should stay pretty cool on 8s because of its KV and the s lipo I am going to use.

THe batteries are also coming from HobbyCity. They are Rhino 3700mah 4s lipos. There 20-30c so they should be able to give the motor what it needs. I will use Losi 8ight E batteries trays. I have seen them use before and I like how they look and function.

Its going to be a slow build because of my money shortage, but I should be able to get it done. What are your inputs?

Mech brakes? Gonna need them with that esc.

Yea I am going to need to figure something out. Maybe I will take a CD mount and mod it to fit my motor then hook up some brakes.

If you can find some sort of cd cups that have the brake flats and have 8mm bore you would be good to go. Something like Mikes CD mount but with the mount holes arranged around the bearing holes would be good. One at each end of the motor to support the shaft will help the motors bearings, especially on the spinning can side.

Those ESC have been proven to only stand up to 5S. Everyone tested fried on 8S. Go with one of the turnugy 80HV controllers on HC.

Where did you hear that those esc can only do 5s max?

Well if thats the case I will use my MMM and get another 3s lipo and run 6s on a different motor.

traxxasbasher13 05.30.2009 01:53 PM

Ok, I am just going to use my MMM and 6s lipo on this motor:http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s..._380Kv_/_1820w

On 6s it should go about 48 mph.

I got some Lexan today and made battery tray things and a motor mount.

traxxasbasher13 06.01.2009 08:22 PM

I got my battery trays assembled and mounted. All I need now is a Motor, a servo and 2 RCM 8mm drive cups.

What do you guys think?

if i were you, i would get a KB45-12l or 8xl motor. they are $40 and $55 and they are very impressive motors. i have both and they do not run hot. the 8xl is complete overkill, but the 12l is about equal in power to the CC/NEU motor. both motors run best on 6s. if your lipos are less than 25c, i reccomend the 12l since it draws MUCH less current than the 8xl. the 12l has peak amps of around 100a and the 8xl peaks at about 150a.

just get a cheap tranny on e-bay and make a custom mount for the motor. i went the lazy route and had kershaw designs make a mount for me.

i thought the kb45 xl series is just a replica of the feigao's. if they do run cool like you say, i think those are best bang for the buck then haha. hows the power vs other motors? you have any to compare them with.

scarletboa 06.16.2009 02:14 PM

i don't have a CC/NEU motor, but i've driven a savage that does and the 8xl is more powerful than the NEU while the 12l is pretty close to the CC/NEU.

these are not feigao replicas as far as i know because feigaos are quite different. feigaos have the standard 5mm shaft and 25mm bolt pattern. i hear the feigao 580 series runs hotter than the KB motors, but i have not seen it in person.
