Hmmm, I may switch to Traxxas connectors

My friend picked up a Traxxas Stampede a few weeks ago and we got to bash last week and I got to play with this TRX connectors a bit. I have to say, its shit loads easier to pull them apart then my deans. My deans are performing well, but they are a real pain to solder correcly and then having to cover up the joins to prevent shorts. Ironically my SMC Lipo's orginally came with TRX as a misorder, but I was so impatient I immediatly switched to Deans. Now after trying both, I think I may get rid of the Deans and go TRX for convienence.

I would agree with you on that. There was a thread debating this (Looooooong time back). Since that's all you have so far, you should switch now.
I'm so heavily invested in Deans, it would be a small fortune and a complete weekend of soldering to get converted.

Traxxas plugs aren't always so easy. When soldering the tabs, you have to make sure to get almost NO solder past the line, otherwise the tab won't "click" in to the housing. And in that process you can easily take up twice as much time as it would take to solder a Deans. After having soldered many of both types, I still prefer Deans (which I've been using for a good 5-6 years).

I've used both, and like deans more. Smaller and "better looking", and I have also never had issues soldering them? The traxxas connectors seemed harder to solder to me.

I gave deans a try in my truggy and wound up switching them to traxxas style. Second week of racing I had a deans come unplugged on me and that made up my mind. The deans are also harder to get together when doing a pitstop/battery swap in a hurry. The traxxas style are easy to line up and plug in. As far as soldering goes if you get solder past the line on a traxxas plug it's true they won't work, but 10 seconds with a dremel cleans them up just fine. I wouldn't mind seeing a 2.0 version or aftermarket traxxas plug that gives more room to solder and a bigger cover to allow bigger wire.

The biggest downside IMO on TRX connectors is the faxt they're hard/impossible to reuse.
But I still think they're better than Deans.

I think they're about the same in current capacity, TRX is just more convenient.

Used to use Deans. Switched to Traxxas connectors when they came out and have been much happier since. A lot of people in our area have been switching recently too.

You can reuse the Traxxas connectors too, just pull them out and re/de-solder as necessary. Quicker battery changes too.

You know if I switched from deans to anything, it would probably be bullet connectors. They probably have the least resistance out of any connector and they don't seem like a pain to get apart after you "Break them in"

I agree that deans are tough to get apart. I wouldn't want to switch to trx plugs though. Recently I bought a large batch of these:

Which are really great plugs. They are made from nylon which is more heat resistant than pvc, making them easier to solder without going soft, grips on the sides make it so much easier to pull them apart and the guy sold them with precut heatshrink pieces, which is nice.

1+ for the TRX connectors for ease of use/durability/size.

They just are a perfect fit for 1/8th scale brushless!

Rebelgium 06.08.2009 09:14 AM

KiZ,
Those connectors were sold by Hobbycity, but unfortunatly they are discontinued as of a week or so ago...
They are indeed great.
They were discontinued due to copyright problems with the Deans lawyers... ;)

I still prefer TRX over them though.

I'm also thinking about switching to bullets, and I'm probably going to buy a whole bunch of 6mm bullets from HC when I buy lipo's there.
They are less user friendly, but undoubtably have less resistance.

JThiessen 06.08.2009 11:07 AM

I wouldnt do bullets, especially with lipos. Too much chance of me brainfarting and putting a positive to negative.

+1 on those. I love them! I always bought those damn expensive real deans for $2,50 per set. Those are 6 dollar for 10 sets or something like that, and they are even better!

thats funny because anywhere i go im the only one using traxxas connectors, everyone calls them greg connectors. lol
