Quick question on Motor mount for Mugen - MBX5-T
Hi, very quick pre-sales question: I am just about to buy a Mugen MBX5-T roller for conversion to BL, but before I did I wanted to check that all I would need in the first instance is the "Electric Motor mount for Mugen" from RCM? (Other than the Motor/ESC & pinion of course).
I don't quite understand the comment on the product page about mechanical braking restrictions - I just want to use motor braking, will that work fine? I know there are also the full TeknoRC kits (out of stock), but in the first instance I just want to convert with the minimum outlay. Any suggestions for a motor/ESC combo for less than $300 that would drop in with the minimum effort? |
You'll need that kit and a battery tray for it, Mike sells them in popular sizes as well as custom if you have a lipo that's an odd size.
For ESC/motor I think your best bet would be the 2200KV MMM combo, I think Mike sells these for around $280. I don't know how many teeth of a pinion you'd want, I'm guessing 14T but I don't know. You will be able to use motor braking with that kit without a problem, mechanical brakes are an option which would require some extra work. Any ESC/Motor will go in with minimal effort. You just need to screw in the motor, add the pinion gear (make sure you use a little blue loctite on the set screw or it'll come loose in about 30 seconds), find a place to mount your ESC, and hook it all up. I like to zip tie my ESCs on top of the center diff, it's a handy place to put it, leaves room on the chassis for batteries and other goodies, and it keeps the ESC fairly close to the motor. |
That's really helpful, thank you for the speedy reply. I shall go ahead and (try to) close the deal on the MBX5-T :-)
I have a couple of MMM combos in use in other trucks already, so that would be a welcome choice as I am familiar with it - I was hoping that would be the suggestion, but didn't want to prejudice the replies! That's a useful tip for locating the ESC - I'll try that. As for battery trays, I guess I'd want to get the largest that would fit the MBX5-T. I have a whole selection of pairs of lipos in 2s, 3s, 4s, and 5s. I guess I would use 4s or 5s to gear for about 40mphe. I think that the centre-diff spur is 46T, so 14T looks good (I get 37mph on 4s from the tool?). I don't suppose anyone can tell me what the largest battery tray that Mike sells that fits an MBX5-T..? |

Measure your largest battery and order a custom size tray if you like. We offer a couple "standard" trays, and also have a custom size option that allows you to enter your needed length and width of the tray. We can also make a rear esc shelf or other custom shapes on the custom tray(see picture for an example). :)

Hi Mike,
Thanks for that (lovely clean install pic by the way! ;-) The MBX5-T got away (last minute went out of my price range), but I am absolutely still planning on picking up a truggy to convert, and I guess current favourite is the Mugen (though I am sure there are other great options I could pick) So as soon as I snag one, I know what I need to order up :-) |
So I finally got that MBX5-T to convert... I have the motor, ESC, everything except the electric motor mount... and they are out of stock here :oh:
Please say that they'll be in by tomorrow..? Or is there another option? ( I don't want a whole Tekno chassis, just a simple bolt-in product) |
Going back to the esc mount location you can use the mount from the caster Fusion, its fits to the back on the centre diff mount without any modification to the MBX5
http://www.junction8models.com/epage...oducts/EX-0507 then use the esc clip from the traxxas and you have a factory esc mount solution :-) http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_...late-BL-E-Revo |
Hey lambchops, yes, that is a nice solution for the ESC - I have just ordered the Caster Fusion plate, and will look for the Traxxas clip in the UK too. Thank you!
I see you have an MBX5 conversion - tell me, roughly what range of pinion sizes will fit (assuming you have the stock 46T centre diff and the RCM motor mount)? I am still deciding on the setup I am going to use - I'd like to be able to run both 4s and 5s, so I would need a range of pinions (well, at least two!) Now I just need Mike to tell me that those motor mounts are coming back in stock so I can send him my order for the motor mount, battery holder, pinions etc... |
Hi, I think you will stuggle to find the esc mount in the UK, im based in the UK too and couldnt find one, I ordered from A main so prob had the last one sorry.. I also had Mikes last Mugen motor mount too hehe
Im running 4 cell 25C 4350 Flightpower batterys and have the standard 46t centre diff. I think though the truggy is gear slightly diffrent so you may want to check that but I run a 16t pinion which seems huge but works very well, very fast top speed 40 ish MPH and amazing punch bottom end. Ive had to set the MMM 70% punch control! Also runs very cool and gives 15 mins racing time. As for what pinion will fit the motor mount is adjustable so would imagine you can go as low as 10t and max as 20t |

I'll pick up the ESC mount sometime when I am ordering more stuff from the US. Modelsport lists them - out of stock now, but they might be able to get them. Quote:
Oh, one question slightly off topic (sorry, but it is to help me do my brushless calculations, honest!) - what are the stock tyres? The truck is still in the post, but I have the picture below - are they stock? If so, what diameter are they? EDIT - I just realised, as you have the buggy not the truggy you are probably not familiar with the truggy wheel sizes! Sorry. |
where abouts you based? We just need a 1\8th brushless to catch on in the UK then we may get a race series..

See, now you want Mike to get those Mugen motor mounts back in stock too!!! [EDIT Oh and I have a couple of other 1/8-ish brushless trucks already I could enter - an E-Revo BE and a Savage Flux. though I plan the Mugen to be the best racer...] |
You should get involved with racing, I race at Clanfield mainly with the odd trip to Slough. We have two guys who race brushless in the truggys heats at Clan so cant see why another wouldnt be welcome.. Next race meeting is the 20th Sept time to get yours sorted ;)

Interesting so there is hope if I move back to the UK (surrey)
|
Absolutely!
