What does timing do on a BL motor? When should you use it, when should u not?

Timing increases punch and rpm slightly and reduces efficiency. I like to keep timing at zero for my motors and gear higher if I want more speed. Basically going up in timing is like fine tuning gearing.

Medium timing is the happy spot on the 1Y

Every motor has a sweet spot much like a nitro motor does. I adjust my timing until I reach the desired run-time, temps, and efficiency I want. Between changing pinions and tweaking the timing a bit, you should be able to balance all three components I mentioned

There is a very useful and informative guide about all the settings on the MMM, but finding it is another thing..

Anyway, raising timing too much will decrease efficiency without nettgin any gain in power, so that means more heat.

The MMM motor works best with low to medium timing (on or two notches above the minimum setting).

For general bashing purposes, set the timing to low/medium, start power to low, punch to about 60-70%, brakes to whatever you feel happy with (40-50%). For racing, I would increase punch control a little, but the rest can probably stay the same- see what other people with similar setups are using (truggy section) for inspiration.

Would those settings also work on 6s?

Yep. Since you have more power available on 6s, you can gear higher, so that would tend to decrease the trucks natural desire to wheelie too, though gearing up too much can cause esc and batt temps to climb. Its all a wonderfully tricky balancing act some times, so its worth experimenting if you can to see what works best for you and the electronics.. :)
