broken pinion gear

Hey guys, just converted my mugen mbx5 with mikes mount and pinion! ran great but my son was bashing it and broke 3 teath off the pinion. i am running stock spur gear. anybody have any ideas why it might have broke?

probably just a weak spot w/in the metal itself

Could have been a rock, too tight a mess or over hardening of the pinion
