Just a tad overkill?

Just a tad overkill for wires and shenanigans?

Thats not overkill.. Our robotics team gets support from Lockheed martin's tech people.. We got the mother of all soldering irons to wire up the bot with some 6 and 8ga wire.. this soldering iron treated them like 20 ga.

It weighs about 5lbs and was wielded like a dagger...

Its the second one from the top

Those pistol guns go get hot (I have a 100w/250w selectable power version), but there is not much thermal mass in the tip and so cools down fast. Not to mention it is a PITA to keep the tip clean at that temperature! Those top few irons in the pic above have much more thermal mass, so you get a more consistent heat without the heat/cool fluctuations.

I just recently picked up a Hakko 936 setup and I can say, its 100 times easier to solder with it than a Weller 100/140 soldering gun. Like BG said, there's more mass in the tip providing a more thorough and consistent heat. Makes soldering easy!!

Ben... you..... nevermind

That was my first post of the morning.... :oh:

the one we used was a 500w, not a 300w

really, damn...

Mike can couch for me. the iron was the size of a billy club and probably weighted the same:yes:

zeropointbug 08.04.2009 12:03 AM

Yeah, that's not overkill... I use a 240/325 watt Weller iron for heavier stuff or big wire like 10ga. soldering to bullet plugs, and soldering to A123 cells. (a typical iron won't suffice)

rawfuls 08.04.2009 12:09 AM

It's overkill from my 50watt...

BL_RV0 08.04.2009 10:22 AM

Upgrade rawbuns, upgrade...

I used to have a 12.5w iron...

rawfuls 08.04.2009 10:32 AM

My 50watt is fine.. for now

brushlessboy16 08.04.2009 10:36 AM

I use a 70 watt, variable heat weller iron.

BL_RV0 08.04.2009 12:55 PM

I use this:

Anything made by chicago electric is out right garbage and nothing more. AVOID anything they make. Unless its a 1 time use then scrap it.
