Been spreading this question around trying to get an answer
 

Hoping that the vast experience of this forum comes through for me again. I've been looking (in the wrong places apparently) all over trying to find the answer. Been to the web sites. Surfed and searched the internets lol , sent emails to a couple companies, etc. No answers found, no replies with the answer, or no replies at all.


What is the physical difference between a Kyosho Style clutch bell and an OFNA/Mugen style clutch bell? Is one of the styles maybe considered the standard style. Meaning if a CB is advertised without indicating a style would it be a OFNA style?

For example here are three 16t clutch bells made by ProTek.

Each indicates a style due to the clutch system but no spec on sizes. I hope I am not the only person in the hobby that doesn't know what the difference is.

I have a LOSI clutch bell and know it is a taller cb then the rest of them. The couple others clutch bells I have I do not know if they are considered one of these styles or not.

If anyone has the two different styles handy would they please take a quick measurement of the sidewall and inside diameter of the two? One of them must be either taller, wider, or both then the other one is.

This is just concerning the 1/8th scale mod1 clutch bells for buggies, truggies, mt, etc.

When you say 'taller' I assume you mean from the open end of the clutch to the end of the pinion dimension.

Going by the pictures in the link the losi is tallest then the ofna then the kyosho. So they are all different. I'm not sure there would a standard size as manufacturers like to make there own size obviously.

I would check the cb's you have and try to guess how far out the pinion sticks out from the bell and try to gage that back to the pictures using your losi cb to help get your eye in.

You'll note the losi and ofna cb's have a gap between the pinion and bell and the kyosho doesn't.

lol. Okay brushless guy you almost had me throw my hands up in air and yell out "I GIVE UP". but I was laughing too hard. This is just the typical response I have gotten else where. I am not blind and I can see some viusual differences and also guess the sizes are different. I do appreciate you trying to help me out. Your post was more helpful then the link that A Main sent me on how to install a CB as a reply to the same guestion. Also more then the responses of just use the HPI CB repsonses, or which ofna do you need the cb for, etc. etc.

You have gotten me to tell the truth though so if you need to know this boils down to more then just getting something to work on my rc. It is something I must find out aboiut. I need to know this info for some reason and just can't stop trying to find some one out there that knows. When I first wanted to know the difference I thought hell that should be an easy one to find out. There only three styles listed and the Losi is fairly new.

Anyways I have a setup that works but that still doesn't put my quest for knowing what the difference between the styles is. How they differ in size or why the cbs out there that don't list a style are not a style themselves. If the non listed style is a standard then there should of probably neen a 4th 16t cb listed without a style. Unless protek just figured to make the three non standard cb and to hell with the guys that use the standard one. So If the cb is listed as a style that must mean something. Right? Kyosho being always slightly differnent in everything from my experience makes me lean towards the cb not a standard size and the ofna a standard. If it is the standard size then to know what the diffence in size of the others would be nice to know for future projects aslo. Plus, I want to be the only on in this damn hobby that actually knows what the difference is and why they are different. Just so I can reply to dumb question like mine like I know what I am talking about. I hope that makes sense. Plus if I curse you as a brushless guy then I am cursing myself. For one my real name is Guy and my brushless rcs are what started this whole mess I am in right now.

So instead of all that I thought I would just ask if anyone knew the differance in actaul mm of them and while waiting perform a sacrafice for the gods in hopes that someone will actually give me an answer to what the actual size difference was.

Yeah, that's the way I picturing the clutch as tall if sitting on a table large diameter down then I thinkg the measurement from the bottem to the very top would how tall it is.

That brings up another one that helps the confusion for me. OFNA also has a 16t cb that in hte description it states....

"This is the standard version where the side of the clutch bell is longer than the narrow version. "

Well Gee I have never used a clutch bell on any of my Maxx trucks, so you just confused the heck out of me with all that babble. Yea I know what the CB is and how it works, but all of these manufacturers have to individualize every darned thing for competitive reasons and just confuse the rest of us. I can hear you now saying "youmotherfinsonofascrewballJerry". I feel your pain though with something like that. It is like having something stuck between your teeth and just cannot get it out, no matter what you try. Good luck getting that figured out, and let us know if you do. I would take the question to one of the RCaction magazine guys to get that analysis into the next issue, and maybe it will straighten things out for a lot of R/C people.

whats a clutch bell, is that the hunk of metal that get 250 degrees on a turd nitro ? I suggest you rip out that stuff buy an RCM conversion kit and forget the issue LOL <~ no help whatsoever sorry

if you need tall clutchbell get Hot Bodies or Fioroni also both are 26.3mm

ofna part#10402 16 tooth clutch bell is 21.844 millimeter tall from bottom to the top of the gear and 26.67mm inside diameter bell. I have a hpi cb which is shorter and others but not exactly sure who makes them. I also have supermaxx clutch bells which seem to be taller then the ofna one but I thought it was made by them so Idk.lmk if you want those measurements also.

Thanks guys most of the replies were real helpful.:whistle: I may have stumped the techs at Kyosho America because they haven't repsonded to my email as of today. They are not alone in not responding yet. I went through my garbage box of part and found that old chewed up CBs to do some measurements on. Looks like I have to rethink what my meaning of tall is.
