Spektrum DX3S, yes, no, why

Need a new radio since I got my brushless e-revo. Currently on 35mhz sticks and I hate that I have to stick the antenna high out of the body to get any range. The tube then gets pinched and scratched and eventually falls off. I see that 2.4ghz receivers have very short antennas that can be hidden in the body. Does it effect range if you have it sticking out, high in the air? (as much as you can)

I don't really need the 3R version, since you have to use more expensive DSM2 receivers to use 5.5ms response time. Can you even notice it while bashing? I'll be getting the ACE Ds1015 servo with 0.10 transit time.

Does the wheel and the trigger feel cheap? Don't want that.

I'd look into the Futaba 3PM, but I don't like the looks of it and there's a new model coming. Plus Futaba receivers have longer antennas and are more expensive.

All in all, worth it? Can you mod it for 5 batts?

No go for the R...

2.4 rocks
S did feel cheap to me
Yes Brian has a mod for 5 bats
R and S are now DSM2 but back compatable to DSM
R has 3 pos AUX for rock crawling
R has 20+ pos memory - S didn't have enough...
S Telem which I would just never use...

I am in the same boat right now.. I have 2 DX2's that need to be replaced. I was going to buy the R but the more I think about it I would rather save the money and buy the S.. I don't really care about the telemetry stuff but I generally setup my radio and leave it.. 10 car memory should be enough.. I would rather have the extra receiver and save 40 bucks. I think..

I too don't need that telemetry stuff. Too much to work on and not accurate. Even if it is compatible with DSM2 it still doesn't support 5.5ms. (like I'll use DSM2 receivers:lol:)

I guess you have the DX3R, is it better made? It would cost me quite more, since it would still be cheaper from the US + customs than UK. I can get the S version for 150 pounds (old one) and the R for atleast 240 euros. Rather buy some lipos for the difference.

(I don't do rock crawling)

R is not really more if you look around...

Do all receivers have that short antennas? Does it effect range on how you place it? (straight up or along the chassis)

Arct1k 08.25.2009 04:09 PM

You are supposed to go straight up but generally I keep them inside the body

I love my M8 on 2.4Ghz

I like it a lot better than the DX2 and DX3 I've had in the past. I wanted the DX3R when it came out and then the S because of the price. But I read they both have their problems and I stick to the people who've been making competition radios for years. :mdr:

Kulangflow has an R for sale for a really reasonable price.

I love my DX3 2.0 - especially compared to the Futuba.

i just got an s and i like it. its light easy to use and it came w/ an extra receiver. my buddy has the r. we both race, him more often than me but we both like the temp sensor on the telemetry. i have run it about 5 packs now and it is about a degree off my temp gun every time. the rpm sensor works ok at lower speeds but i find when i finish a race the max recorded value is way off. not really looking at the radio while racing but more curious to see if it would work at all. the s does look cheaper but it was! and it came w/ 3 rubber grips l/m/s to fit your hand better.
