new BL set-up

Just got a 9920 and Lehner 2800XL for my E-maxx. Now I need to make sure the rest of the drivetrain can take the abuse. I'm not going for all out speed runs. I want to have some fun down at the track and maybe give some nitro guys a run for their money.
I assume upgrading the spur/pinion is first. Heard bad things about Robinson slipper clutches having "wobbly" spurs and wasn't sure about metal vs plastic spurs or spur size either. Any experiences good or bad? It's a given that I'll get a set of steel idlers shortly. Any other suggestions before I try to fire it up? Thanks.

JJ

Alot of guys here get the Ofna spur from Mike here... with that you'll need the 1mod pinion gear with that also. Yah the steel idler is a definate... You might also want to upgrade to CVD's.. I dont know if you already did though. Good luck with the BL. Makana

A single speed transmission would be nice, you can get rid of a servo and save weight because the tranny is half the size. Have you thought of lipo's or the new limn's I read it today on here look for the thread "Question for you guys running brushless and Lipos.... Get a temperature gage if you don't have one so you can check the temp on the esc and motor. I hear the lehner's run a little warm. If I think of any thing else I will post. Good luck

Good luck with your new setup, Yes, a single speed would take out some unnecisary weight, with BL, first gear is useless..

I agree with mmdooley on the temp gauge, its a must with brushless motors. I hope you enjoy your BASIC XL, I've got one too and love it!

I like to have the first gear on a basher. Cvds are a good thing to have. The steel idlers are a must to. But most of this has been said. I would get a temp guage for sure if you don't have one. I had a xl2000 on 18cells. I had it over geared and kill the poor little motor. Well good luck on your project. Welcome to the forum.

Thats exactly what I run coolhand. What did you put the gearing at to smoke that motor. Mine runs fine at 19/70. Temps no higher than 130 on a cool day (50F).

coolhandcountry 02.16.2006 04:26 PM

I don't remember now exactly. I had it geared like 20 66 or so but had some big tires on it. I think that didn't help. I do run the stuffing out of my trucks. It got hot and fried the winding in side the motor. The esc didn't get hot. It was a potent little motor.

How does you 9/10XL compare on the same cell count? More power? Cooler temps?

If you go with the Ofna Gear your will need the Strobe Slipper to go with it. (Recommended)

Also you will twist those plastic sliders in no time with that brushless setup. CVDs all around.

Okay, so after listening, I've got a full set of CVDs coming, a Strobe slipper and the Ofna spur (black nylon), steel idlers, and a bunch of duratrax powerpoles are now on all my electronics. Anything I'm missing? How about a good start point for a pinion size?

makana59 02.17.2006 12:44 AM

maybe a 15, 16 tooth pinion would do....

coolhandcountry 02.17.2006 01:42 PM

I would drop a 14 on it to start. Maybe a 15.
I have not got to run a 10xl yet. The 9xl is much more torque and so bigger tires and pinion don't hurt. It runs much cooler to. I didn't get to test the run times on it. It was being tested when fried out. It happens right.

I'm seeming to be having a hell of a time finding a mod1 pinion 'round 14 tooth that ISN'T a 5mm bore. The Lehner motor I have has a 1/8" shaft! I starting to pull my hair out. (what little is there to begin with) Is the Strobe slipper bolt pattern compatible with another spur that's maybe 32 pitch?
