How to look like a unabomber(funny)
 

So Mike (eovnu87435ds) and I are making a Robotic bed for our schools play "A christmas carol" for the scene where scrooge is being visited by the ghost and the bed jumps around..

So we spend the day testing pneumatic actuators to see what certain ones were capable of to lift the bed and person on top of it.. We ended up with high volume 1-2in diameter 12in stroke units. they suck up alot of air! So we needed as much air capacity as we could possibly get. We went scrounging through our robotics teams Supply room and found every air tank we could find.. 4 compressors and a crapload of fittings and teflon tape.. This is what we came up with

Like I said to Mike, I knew it was for school, because the hoses, the pipes, were way too nice.
No duct tape.
Had to be something that had to look good...

we've collected those cylinders over the past 6 years. 90% of them were still in the plastic wrap. never touched.

also, any Red Vs Blue fans that are out there, find the RvB reference in those pics!

Whatever oil or lubricating grease they use on those pistons smelled horrible.... and those were NIP too from 2000

we made a huge water gun out of our tanks and compressor. Seal a huge tank up....charge that baby out...and PSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSs:lol:

When you guys talk about looking like the unibomber and a school play, I expected dumb pics of you two in fake beards or something you stole from the theater group.

That's a lot of money in all those Nycoil fittings. lol
That tubing is only rated for ~150psi, so be careful (assuming its poly-u.) I doubt those compressors go over that tho.

Stuff like that is fun to build.

Alot of money in fittings, and we get this stuff for (essentially) free. Every year, with the new robotics game, we receive a kit of parts with some basic stuff in there, to help teams get started, and to cut down orders to the suppliers who normally offer it. Every year, we get some pneumatic stuff in that kit, and every year we never use it, so we stockpiled it all. :lol:

We already had a 250 lb guy jump up and down directly on the piston, and we haven't had a rupture. If it can hold that, it can withstand 200lbs of kids lying in the middle of the bed, where their mass is only being rotated, not lifted.

And when aren't pneumatics fun? My saying is "when the winds of change blow hard enough, they can turn even the most trivial of things into deadly projectiles."

If you want to, we'll let you know when the bed is finished if you want to come on down and check it out. It won't be that far of a drive for ya

but however take a closer look at the two large tanks... one is named andy becasue it looks like a bomb. and one is sheila because its a big tank....

The tubing is rated for 150.. we have taken it to that. the compressors are rated to 200 by the blow off valves.
