BL Savage 3-speed settings- need help
Hey Guys,
New to the forum. I have a setup that looks something like this: Fiegao 8L brushless motor BK Electronics 9920 ESC Intellect IB 4200 NIMH - 14cells I'm playing with the 3speed right now and am wondering if anyone has settings they currently use with a similar system. Don't want to reinvent the wheel if I don't have to. Thanks all in advance. Tweedle Dum |
None of the users here is using an 8L on their savage, with the three speed.
Who advised you this setup? What settings do you want to know? |
There is only one way to tell. You have to tighten thrid up so it don't shift and then adjust second. Then go for the thrid adjust. It is a pain with a three speed. What gearing and stuff are you using.
|
Well, I suppise I advised myself. For better or worse I guess.
I'm basically looking for 3 speed tranny settings, or number of turns between 1 and 2nd for smooth shifting. I'll have to look at pinion closer, but am using a 52t spur. I do have other spurs, but was just testing. Right now I have 3rd locked, but am unsure if it's shifting, not leaving 1st, or starting in 2nd. Thanks for above replies guys. |
Coolhandcountry,
Thanks for the helpful information. I had a chance to play with it tonight using your advice. I figured it out. Zips along real nice and now the battle is keeping it from flipping over not only when it begins, but when it hits 2nd as well. I'll play with 3rd gear tomorrow. :027: Thanks! |
It is hard to figure out and get it right. I think it works good after you get it though. I had mine set then changed some things around now it is acting up. I geared up a little to help with power problem. But then again I running a weak 4.6 motor and not brushless.

Tweedle Dum, did you check the temps on that motor? An 8L on 14 cells isnt very good, especially on a heavy truck like the savage! the lowest i wouldve gone was a 9 or 10L!
|
I checked with my temp gun just this afternoon. I ran around then did a few runs back and forth along the street. I checked temps 1st shot around and I had ~80-90F. I finally got the 3rd gear all set up to where I am happy and after 4 or 5 full runs after all that, I came back and measured both the controller and motor at 98F and 100F respectively. Is this too cold? I didn't seem like it. I'm just used to my 290F Nitro engines. The perfermance met my expectation though. No glitching, or noticable loss of performance that I can see, but I can't consider my evaluation more than just that, inexperienced but happy. I'm not a hardcore racer by any means, just enjoy the hobby, so had lots of fun trying to keep the wheels down. Other than that, thanks again coolhand, that info helped get me up and going faster than I had expected.

Good to hear, those are good temps, they seem a bit low for what your running!

Well with the brushless the cooler the better. It is not a problem. I wish that second was easier to adjust myself. I was thinking of going electric on my savage to. Or build another one like it. Well happy rcing.

I actually never thought of going electric until a few weeks ago. I own 2 savages, a 4.6 nitro and another with a ported S25. They scream and run great! I just wanted an option to run in the neighborhood on occasion without disturbing our mostly retired neighboorhood. They're great neighboors, so would like to keep that relationship going. So my wife picked up the tab for :043: -Day to set me up with all the components I picked out. Kinda strange to see the E-Savage jolt to life and race on the street with so little sound.:027: |
Hey your neighbors like it better I am sure. The nitro is kind of loud some time. It is nice if got the place to run them. But the neighbors don't like to hear them.
|
any news on the three speed?
|
I came up with an idea of how to adjust it. Take the thrid clutch and second and swap. You can adjsut the shift point for sec on the thrid gear. That away it is only a few swap out of the trans. I have not tried this yet. Just need to make sure the thrid is tight when swap it.

I was worried I wouldn't be able to hear it shift because I'm used to the deliberate sound nitro's make when they shift. I heard it shift perfectly each time! :D It took me a bit to figure it out, but found that I had to adjust the tranny to shift earlier on both gears. I don't think I've hit top speed yet, as I keep running out of room on my street. Everytime it hits 3rd, I'm already into a busy cross street, makes me nervous, so brakes come on.:frown: I have to find a longer strip. I zip-tied my gps on it to get some kind of speed reading, and I've got 39.6 in before shifting out of second. I'll get back to you when I get it into 3rd on a long stretch. So far so good. Probably not very fast by some standards, but plenty fast for me. |
