Which feigao for summit (multi purpose truck) on 4s?
I have a summit I want to use for a bit of crawling/extreme offroad use. I also will be doing street runs (p2's, slammed on phalt lines or the like).
Which of the XL Feigao's would be best suited for 4s voltage? Since I am only running 4s I want to make sure I get enough rpm but torque is key for running the big heavy canyon stock tires (can use gearing to get the speed in street trim). 7XL? 8XL? Any input is appreciated |
Which esc?
You wont be able to crawl effectively with a high KV motor, and gearing up too much with those spinning toaster ovens of deaths will just make them overheat and de-magnetize quicker than normal, especially in heavier trucks. 9XL (~1900kv) would be a good allrounder that doesnt fry too quickly, good power on 4s & not overly twitchy with taller gearing. The 7XL is a speed run only motor, the 8XL was a common choice a few years ago fo most bashers, but these days the 9XL is most often recommended since replacing $60 motors every few runs gets quite old rather quickly. Still, dont be expecting more than about ~40mph from your setup with any of the feigao XL motors on 4s lipo, you'd be better served with a higher quality item that costs a bit more, otherwise keep a close eye on temps when running the motor on the street, no more than 180*F. |
Well Dan @ Kershaw designs is actually having me test a new (el cheapo 80a) controller (non programmable) and said I can pick which XL can motor I want to go with it for testing (he has his "own" XL motors and said they are more efficient/better built than the feigao's so I will probably just go with one of his).
I think 9xl sounds like the ticket. When I say crawl I dont really mean the .25mph stuff. Just a couple MPH (with low gear anyway I dont think it will be too bad since the motor will be turning a decent RPM instead of being in high gear and trying to make the truck just barely move). I am just hoping for 40mph on street trim (maybe gear for 25 mph dirt trim). My total cost is going to be CHEAP so im not too worried about the setup. If any part of it fries he will replace as needed to see what needs to be done to get the setup reliable in a kit form for purchase by the general consumer. I can always upgrade to a better motor later if I feel the need or it craps out after the period Dan agrees to replace it. What would be a good motor in the ~100 dollar range to run on 4s? I know everyone raves about the castle motor? Anything in between the feigao's and castle? I also know people have been happy with (roughly) 2200 RPM motor the hobbywing 80a/150a esc combo's come with. Maybe one of those? |
yes, a kershaw designs sticker makes anything that it is applied to better built/more efficient......................................... ........

Well you dont have to be an asshat...
Unless you know his sourcing for motors how would you know its efficiency or build quality compared to anything else? I have never used his products before so I am merely basing my statements off of what he has told me. If he is lying then show me some evidence of this and I will know. Good luck with the BL system in the chair; wheels.... Mods please delete this. I will find another place to ask my questions. |

I'm sure ass! I'm sure Harold does, but I take offense to that comment! Why don't you prove their BETTER EFFICIENCY then? Otherwise shut up and hold your pervasive comments to yourself! |
Again... If you knew how to read you would READ my post. I stated that DAN @ KERSHAW DESIGNS TOLD ME WHAT I POSTED. I asked, if he knew otherwise from what I posted (it seemed he did to make the comment he did) then to POST THAT INFORMATION instead of making a dumbass comment belittling Dan's products. I have never used them before so I don't know either way but unless information is posted to prove otherwise I have no reason not to believe him.
Trolling with nonsense comments is what the traxxas forum is for. Did you see a request in the OP about "please respond with troll comments only" ??? When your re-reading the rest of the shit you mis-read you can look for that statement as well. About the comment...Someone who can dish out comments on other peoples products/integrity can surely take a jab themselves, right?? |
sorry man. i'm a joker, that's all. If we were in the same room you would have seen that I said what I said jokingly, and probably would have laughed. Part of the problem of the internet. I should have added an
I've seen rebadged motors quite a bit, so it was funny to me. I find it hard to believe that Dan found anyone but feigao to supply him motors for the price he slls them at,but you are correct, I don't know. Don't ask questions somewhere else, we're freakin' self appointed genuises over here:lol: P.S. I take jabs quite easily. Lying down in fact! (I live in a bed:lol:) |
Damn the internet and its lack of emotion expression (well when not used..lol). Sorry to snap its been a LONG damn weekend. I had to work 24 hours over a 48 hour period. At the end of it I got the call my grandmother was dying. In the middle of the 3 hour drive down she passed before I could say goodbye.
On the way back home I bent 2 out of the 4 rims on my car on a pothole so the entire way home my car vibrated like a Bi#$H I think I need to go make a post on "F)#& My Life.com" lol. Sorry about the jab it was rude and unnecessary. Everyone in this life has flaws and problems, myself included! Dan @ Kershaw just seemed like a good honest guy so I thought you were bashing him for no good reason but I read too far into the comment. If I lived any closer I would buy you a beer and talk brushless :) |
It's all good:yes:
Sorry to hear about your weekend. I'm lucky to be having lunch with my grandma on wednesday, she's really slowing down lately. May your grandmother rest in peace. |
Children...
It would be interesting to hear some first hand feedback on how Dan's motors perform- I have noticed them on his site, and he is a stand-up guy for sure, not like Chris at FineDesign (soon to be out of business it would seem). For an 80amp esc, the 9XL would be perfect, comparable to an MM modded to run on 4s with... a 9XL :mdr: in theory atleast. As for a ~$100 motor, its kinda tricky really. You have the feigaos and Dan's motors in the $50-80 range, or there used to be the Medusas in the $120-150 range, but beyond that there isnt an an awful lot really- noting that isnt some obscure chinese or German brand no-ones heard of at anyrate. A CC2200kv motor from ebay woudl be good, or the 2650kv version even if you gear it down a bit- smaller size can be compensated for with the shorter gearing and higher kv to a fair extent (L can motors in maxxes is nothing new for example). When you do test the setup Dan sends you, be sure to record the temps during and after the run, taking note of your trucks setup and the terrain/ driving style etc. Sorry to hear about your Nan too, thats a shitty weekend for sure. |
