finally pulled the trigger

i finally broke down and bought a MMM esc. i was planning on buying another ezrun 150a esc, but i like the idea of actually having a good warranty. i paid $170 for it at my LHS. i know i could have gotten it for $150 shipped off ebay, but i prefer to support my LHS. it took me 5 months to get my money back from the burnt ezrun and the refund was from nitrorcx, not hobbywing. also, i would like to change my settings without making the esc catch fire:lol:

couple of questions:

i plan on running 6s on my savage and 4-6s on a CEN matrix buggy. how high is the failure rate on 6s? i will be using 25c 5000mah zippy flightmax 3s packs for the savage and buggy and 20c 2s 5000mah turnigy packs for the buggy.
both the savage and buggy will be geared for ~40mph. i don't think those setups will push the batteries or esc too hard, but i would like a 2nd opinion just to be sure. while the warranty is nice, i would prefer to not need it.:whip:

also, i bought just the esc separately instead of the combo. will it still come with castlelink?

edit: the matrix has a 60mm 2000kv medusa motor and the savage has a 1400kv KB12L motor.

I don't think the failure rate is any worse on 6s that any other voltage, and very unlikely now as castle keeps improving them. Gearing for 40mph seems to be about right for a good running set up, so no worries there. Castlelink should be included with just the esc (it was with mine). BTW you can actually get one shipped for less than $150 right here at RCM. I too like to support the local hobby shop (after a few years without), but they rarely have anything I want.

the $140 MMM on rcmonster is from the CC/MMM combo. it doesn't come with the motor wires or bullet plugs because the motor comes with them in the combo.

Yeah, I guess you will pay a bit more if you need the wires and plugs.

i ended up getting the MMM and i couldn't be more satisfied with it. i have about 4-5 hours of runtime on it and it runs very nicely. the programming features are a huge plus too. it is mostly used in my 10lb CEN matrix geared for ~9.5mph per lipo cell. i popped my 2 3s packs in for a few 60mph passes with heavy braking and the esc didn't break a sweat. (other than the fan being on after about 10 passes)

my setup is pretty heavy and most of it's runtime has been on 3s and 4s. the fan is on about 50-60% of the time after the 5 minute mark. i didn't realize that it would be pushed so hard in a buggy. i don't know how to temp the esc, but my 2000kv medusa runs around 150F on 4s after 20 minutes.

long story short, i now see why the MMM is a little more expensive than the EZrun despite similar FETs and specs. the MMM is smaller, more programmable, has MUCH better cs, and is so much smoother.

A+
