guys that converted 8ight truggy to E

Ok, I bought a RTR 2.o truggy a few weeks back. I love it. I really wanted electric from the start but lacking another 600 at the moment. But by spring time I really want to convert. Qestion is, for those that had nitro truggies, are you much happier running electric? Can a good setup be more cost effective than 30 bucks a gallon. Not that I'm in it to save money!! I just really want the ability to do things that a nitro can't do. I have a full blown track at my place and I come from a 23 yr motocross background. I really like making tricky rythem sections. Seems the snap of the electric is much more fun.

Any input is greatly apprecited

First, welcome to RCM! You will be able to do more on a track w/electric vs. nitro. They are much quicker for starters...given your setup, you should be able to get 12-15 mins. per battery, depending on setup...maybe more. If you need a complete converson, Mike sells all the parts you need to convert it over...motor mount, battery tray. You can have Mike make a custom size tray made to fit your batteries if you so desire. All my vehicles have custom trays made by Mike and it is well worth the extra $ 12- IMO to insure the batteries fit nice and tight.

Any ideas on how many cells you are going to run or motor, esc choices?

this esc/motor combo on 5s is killer
or this one

Both esc in the listed above are excellent and easy to program. For true racing the Tekin set up is smoother than the mmm esc.

For 5s w/the cc combo the 2200kv will make your truggy scream
For a 5s set up w/the Tekin...you could use the 1700kv, 2000kv motor. The 1700 will be more efficient though.

well, I drove My buddies Buggy that was brushess and it was awesome. Well I am pretty new to all the E terminoligy. But from the reading I've been doing is that 4s are a lot of fun and pretty reliable and 6s are insane. My buddy is running one pack but it looks like a double pack. I went like 20-25 min having fun on my track. I think they are like 180 apiece. I am going to aquire the items this winter. charger, conv kit, motor assy, batteries. Maybe like one a month. I like the nitro, but for my style I think the E would be so much fun.. Eco friendly too!! He had a teikin esc/motor setup, after I got done messin around he changed packs and then the esc went up in flames.. I heard teikin had some bad esc's or something. My guy at the LHS said he would go with a teikn setup because it is sensored, The monster is not I guess. Im pretty sure he was running theses batteries. I just want a setup that will be reliable. thanks

Tekno makes a pretty nice conversion also.
Their kit replaces the entire chassis. I'd recommend going with the long shank pinion (over the clutch system) - and make sure you get the longer of the two battery trays.
If you go with theirs, you need to know which motor you are going to run - the motor fits inside the mount, instead of just being face mounted.

In all honesty, if you want a reliable set-up, I'd run the Mamba Monster 2200kV combo on 4S for track use. 5S for bashing.

Well, the electric conversion may start sooner than I anticapated. I am so sick of nitro, I'm having a heck of a time getting this 454 motor running right. Heck, I've burned 3/4 gallon. Plus I hate the starter box, with a pation!! I have the brand new 454 that came with my RTR that maybe I can get a few bucks for. plus I need two new batteries for my jump box, I would rather put 65 bucks towards the E conversion.

So, I know the downsides to the nitro, but what are the downsides to the E? Besides the obvious initial cost. How many charge cycles do the batteries last? Also, are the losi batteries/chargers pretty good. Probably gonna do 2 4s and 1 5s. Thanks guys

I'd suggest reading this thread...

It is a very good point of reference for anyone considering a 8T conversion

Marvin 11.01.2009 06:34 PM

I wouldn't bother with the Losi stuff. The batteries are quite poor for the price charged. A nice Hyperion would be far better. Even the cheaper CX range would be better than the Losi packs.

I'd also go with a Hyperion charger too, good value and excellent features.

The batteries, well looked after, should last hundreds of cycles, or probably 4 or 5 seasons of racing. Far more than any nitro engine.

I've been running an 8ight-t 1.0 for well over a year now.. it's awesome and I still love it. I have had quite a few brushless systems in it and yes I would tell anyone the best bet is the MMM 2200 system. The tekin system are nice don't get me wrong and you have a lot of kv choices, but I'd still take the MMM combo as my first choice. I agree though a 4s sytem is perfect, and I'd say spend a couple bucks and pick up a pair of the Hyperion 6500mah 4s vx packs (35c) you can get these as low as ~168ea maybe better if you have a connection and they are sweet packs that will last you a long time. I wouldn't get anything smaller than a 5000mah pack w/ a 25c rating as the truggy does beat up weak packs even some 25c 5k's. If you don't go w/ the Losi conversion kit, I'd actually point you to the tekno conversion as first choices. As noted the Hyperion chargers are really awesome.. and if you can afford it go w/ a hyperion duo but no matter what you do get something capable of at least 250watt total.

dnrcustoms 11.01.2009 08:42 PM

What type of run time racing /bashing with a good the hyperion 6500 35c are you seeing? Also, approx charge time?? Would I need at least 3 batteries to have fun. or would two be pretty good. I have been hearing good things about mm motors. Some say tekin is more of a racer type, but have a few reliability issues.

Anybody have a link to the right hyperion charger I should get.

I just want to be able to be on the same page as my buddy, he has a RTR truggy that has a better o.s race motor in it. He says I should sack up and stay with the nitro, but I am just sick of it. 32 bucks a gallon and I hate having to tune when the wind changes directions. Appreciate all the info guys..

Also read the whole link posted above by electric Dave... Good write up

stum 11.01.2009 10:51 PM

Those vx 6500's should get you 12-15mins of HARD racing (pro-level) w/o any issues depending on gearing maybe a little more... Bashing obviously will get your more time.. 20+ minutes easily. I have not had a lot of run time w/ these new packs so I'm sure someone can trump in w/ some better specifics.

kalbien 11.02.2009 09:37 AM

Well I have two batteries for racing (3300mah 5s hyperion vx batteries) and I know I can run them 13minutes on track when needed)

charging them on 5c = no need for more than two, however I would rather get another 5000 zippy battery for bashing and won't charge hyperions as fast as possible.

about charger.. I would go with either two first here
http://media.hyperion.hk/dn/eos/
EOS 0720i will be my choice since I really never need to charge two batteries at once. but if you will be on track a lot for long time periods than maybe EOS 0615i DUO3 is your right choice.

make sure to get proper power supply for both of those

grevo26maxx 11.03.2009 09:25 AM

I have a 8ight t 2.0 sitting here loaded and I tell ya what it kills nitros all day long. The power is just unreal. Show me a nitro truggy that will wheely on command! Get teh upgraded diff cups with the metal inserts and your good. Get the zippy lipo packs 4 cell 5000mah or more and your good! http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m...cture075-1.jpg

Are you running the Mamba 2200??

So, no regrets. I have about 5 buddies that think I will not like it. I think they are scared of getting whooped.

How much run time are you getting with your setup? How much time do you have on your motor/esc?
