Losi 8ight speed project

Well I finally have some time to start on a project now that the semester is over. Just got home and began to work on my tekno losi 8ight conversion that i purchased from Desert RC here on the forums. Got a couple more parts on the way and some wires to solder but shes almost ready to go. Anyways here's some pics:

It looked like Christmas morning under the staircase when I showed up to my house

My buddy just gave me a call with my exact electronics setup but on a losi 8ight-e 2.0 hitting 96mph on 25/43 gearing not punched all the way and scared to death. This is going to be a fun competition to say the least. :intello:

Those wheels are goodness for sure!!

i did 100mph last summer with this 8ight. i had video of it up for a long time.

http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/g...t/HPIM6420.jpg

here's what i did:

1. locked the center diff with playdough (very important)
2. geared it 43/25
3. mamba 2650 motor on 40C 6S lipos
4. Losi rally tires (now GRP tires...aren't they freakin amazing?)
5. adjusted the throttle curve to a more aggressive acceleration.
6. RCM motor mount

i just got a pistix to run the phoenix HV 110. i wanna try 8S, but i'm having a hard time trying to design a place to put the servo for the manual brakes.

i dig your buggy. very nice indeed. can you get a 25t long bore pinion for the tekno setup? can you post a link please? if so i might build another, so i can install a brake servo. it looks like yours will accomodate it easily. that is one sick chassis design.

also, those rally tires take forever to wear out. i probably have close to 80 packs through mine and their still sticky. i bought some back-up sets as well, but i'm not sure i'll ever need them. LOL

anyway, very cool design man.

DCastaneda 12.17.2009 01:11 AM

My buddy hit 100mph with your exact gearing/setup except hes running the same lipos as me.

I hit 93mph tonight on the car's first run, VERY impressed thus far. As far as the pinions go the largest that will fit with my conversion I'm using a 25tooth on the 1st gear of the rc-monster 2speed conversion, I will try to fit a 29tooth on the 2nd speed but i need the "long shank motor plate" from tekno first. I will break 100 within the coming days and I will get video of both me and my buddies ASAP. Had an unfortunate blow over at near top speed and i was not running a wing at the time, resulting in the most painful lid skid I'd ever had to endure. The result? nothing more than a scratched front shock tower and shaven down wing mount.
Here's some pics of my finished buggy:

Interesting, I can only imagine the stress on the motor shaft due to that pinion setup... You need to move the motor closer to the center diff bulk...

Glad you had some success, speed is fun!

What spec battery are you using?

DCastaneda 12.17.2009 03:10 AM

The different motor plates to move the motor forward are in the mail, rest assured it will not stay as it in the photos for long. The lipos are shown in the original post, but I'm using Zippy 4000mah 6s 30c lipos. They work great so far, maxing the temp on them at 104 degrees on my completely enclosed body.

DwightSchrute 12.17.2009 03:01 PM

i think i might have to build one of those. that project is outstanding. nice job.

Link where did you get the GRP tires from? I would like to pick up a set or 2...

I should have kept my Tekno converted 8ight...

The description says soft but trust me, the compound is like that of a 1:1 car LOL. Shipping seems expensive but it only takes about 3-5 days from Italy.

I'm so impressed with the losi speed project that I've decided to convert my race roller over to brushless as well. I just need a rear shock tower, steering servo, and battery tray to be done. Here's some progress pics:

on the pro roller, it looks like you have the diff turned around. you could use a normal sized pinion if you turned it around. i took some pics for you:

http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/g...ofHPIM6430.jpg

http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/g...t/HPIM6429.jpg

if you use a steel spur it'll work great, you just can't gear it over a 45T. so is that a big bore pinion in the pro roller too?

i think i'm gonna try the same build you did for running 8S with the HV-110. that 2 speed gear looks like a great idea. also, is there a way to get the motor closer to the spur gear? i was over at impakt rc, and i couldn't find any variations for a motor mount. would it just mean re-drilling the holes in the chassis?

DCastaneda 12.17.2009 08:59 PM

What do you mean by "big bore pinion"? Do you have aim/msn? It would be much easier to discuss all this over instant message.

As far as the diff, i knew something seemed wrong! no wonder they raise the diff 3mm. I would need to buy another spur gear though, as the one currently on there is a 46tooth, and you say a 45 is the max before it starts to hit?

Sorry, i mis-spoke. i meant a long shaft pinion. like the novak pinions. I don't have aim or msn cause it always crashes this dinosaur of a cpu i have. LOL

Someone who had a 46t said his fits, so i'm not 100% on that one. i just read somewhere that 45 was supposed to be the limit, but maybe they were wrong. you might have to try it out to be sure. as far as a battery box, impaktrc sells the losi battery box which imo the best one to have because it's huge and will accomodate any pack you might wanna use.

DCastaneda 12.17.2009 11:19 PM

Yeah that's the tray I'm going with. Getting the rest of the parts locally.

For the tekno conversion the best option is the rc-monster 2 speed adapter and then just order one of these:
http://www.impaktrc.com/product_info...oducts_id=3161

It moves the motor forward a bit compared to the elektri-clutch mounts:
