how to remove stripped set screw???

hey guys,

im having a little problem with the set screw that holds the pinion to the motor shaft. it is now rounded and there is no way for me to get it off. this is really frustrating. its a 1/16th size and im using quality eds hex drive. any idea how i might get the set screw out?

thanks

Screw removal.

Hey Moe there are two ways that I know of. The first is to use a type of easy out, which has a pointed end with left hand threads. You insert it into the stripped out socket and turn it counter clockwise. It digs into the set screw and forces it to back out. With a set screw that small though it is more likely that you may have to drill it out completely using a drill bit slightly smaller than the threads themselves. Once you drill out most of the material you should be able to force the gear off of the shaft. This will leave just a small amount of material in the threads, which you can remove with a tap the same size as the setscrew itself.

When possible I try to drill my pinion gears out and retapping them and use a slightly larger set screw. That may help reduce the chances of stripping out the socket. Good luck wiht that.

WOW new to RCM hu? Welcome aboard young man. Trust that whatever you need in the way of info on R/C in general this is the place to look for it. Search around in the threads that are already here in RCM and you should find most of what you are looking for, and if not then there are plenty of very knowledgable techy types in here to help you out. Good luck with your new adventure with the RCM family.

There have been many threads dedicated to the removal of threaded fastners. A quick search on here should turn up a handful of threads detailing how to do this, please in the future try searching. Since this thread is already here, the easiest way is to use a dremel tool with a cut off wheel. Simply cut the pinion off! HAHA no seriously now use a cutoff wheel and make a slot in the setscrew and use a regular screwdriver to remove it. If you have used loktite this will be more difficult but it can still be done. Once you make a slot with the wheel you can use a small butane torch lighter to heat up the pinion slightly, the heat softens the loktite and it should back out.

thanks guys. i ended up drilling a hole through the set screw and sliding it out from the motor shaft. i did make a bigger hole on the pinion and retap the screw thread so it can fit bigger set screw.

thanks for the advise

Good to hear

Good to hear that it worked out for you, and that you received some good advice from RCM.
