just made the order mini ste

i couldn't handle it after reading about them, i have a mini ste coming. my wife's probably going to throw a fit, but she'll get over it. i'm not sure what i'll put in it, but i'll post as soon as she's running. should be a nice jump back in after my nearly 10 month break from this.

tashpop 01.07.2010 02:54 PM

i'll have the truck tomorrow it looks like. i'm looking for brushless system for it. for now i was thinking about borrowing my vlx stuff off the pede but long term i'm still looking. is the mmp an ideal esc? i'm thinking it with a 5-6cell for my mega 22/30/2 might make this guy alot of fun.

rexasso 01.08.2010 07:49 AM

I have a VXL on the stock e-revo vxl (1/16) : I think that it uses battery quicker than other BL combo : less than 15mn with 2s 2200.

For my Mini Ste, I have a HC 100A contro with KD3650. It is on the box and not yet setup, so I cannot give you a feed back yet (except that I was very happy of EZrun product for the RC18, which motivated me to buy the 100A for the 1/12)

tashpop 01.08.2010 09:46 AM

yeah, i'm just not sure only because you can get the castle sidewinder esc for less than that controller. is it worth that with castles option?

rexasso 01.08.2010 10:06 AM

THe thing is that castle does not mention max amp for their controller.
For sure HC is a litlle optimistic so 100A is the max but let say that 80A is not a problem at all and 80A for a mini ST with a KD36 : I am sure it will never reach it, so the temp should be fine and run well

Moreover Castle needed special link to configure and I don't want to use a PC to change my conf. Now a new card has been proposed by castle. I don't know is old sidewinder can use it. For sure a MMP is a cool solution with this card but became too expansive for my project.

wheres the best place to look at and purchase these if i decide? i do have a hobbywing 100a hv i used in an 1/8th onroad and never had issues with it.

lincpimp 01.08.2010 12:21 PM

I think 2s is a good battery size to run in the ste. I used a neu 1509 (4500kv) with a MM. Not much real estate under that body, so a smaller esc and rec are a must. Not sure if a sidewinder would do with hot motor and 2s lipo. You could go with a 3s lipo, but I would try to keep the weight about the same as a 2s hardcase pack, as that seems to be about the optimium weight. If I were to do it again with new equipment (I had everything laying around) I would go with a 3s 3000mah 35-40c lipo, something around 3500kv for the motor, and either a sidewinder/external bec of the MMPro.

tashpop 01.08.2010 01:59 PM

i was really trying to make some use of what i have laying around, and that mega motor needs some voltage being 1770kv. i may have to rethink this whole project. batts will be cheaper though going to 2-3cells.

The Sidewinder can be programmed by your transmitter (limited settings), the program card (more settings), or computer (most settings). I think the sidewinder might be a bit light on power for the truck, but the Mamba Max or Mamba Max Pro would be great, or even the Monster. Plus, you know with Castle gear you'll have great support if you need any help or repair, which is a big plus. I know people have lot's of success with EZ-run gear, but I'm just partial to Castle because they've never let me down.

tashpop 01.09.2010 10:08 PM

yeah, i've had mm and a sidewinder before and they where great. i was mainly trying to get this thing up and running with minimum $$ using the motor i already have. i ran a hotbodies ls10 with the sidewinder no problem, so i may just look into that. i already have a ccbec, but have to look into motor options now. i don't want to spend alot on that so i'll have to do some looking around or watch for some used deals.

on a side note, i was tearing apart my running gear off my stampede just to get it running for now, and i can't get the motor screws out for nothing. i'm sure it would do nice in it, and hold me over until i gather my final running gear so if anybody has some suggestions on getting those screws out that would be great.

i was thinking about cutting a slot for a flat head on them for a better bite but i'll have to remove the trans for better access. they're the stock traxxas large headed hex bolts.

more thoughts, did anybody have issues with the servo being tight against the proline body that comes with the newer trucks? mine's rubbing badly, i may have to use a heat gun and mold it out more.

rexasso 01.10.2010 05:24 AM

I should build my ste today with Hitec servo, so I will let you know tonight

tashpop 01.10.2010 09:48 AM

i'm using a jr 8411 i think is the number

tashpop 01.10.2010 02:37 PM

ok, got a trial run out of her. the velinum system from my pede isn't doing it for me in this truck. just doesn't seem to have what i want. i know my batteries are on the small side, but 3 cell just didn't yeild much out of it. i also need to go thru the diffs and get the fluid changed out for something thicker. i'm getting all front wheel spin. i may see what my a123's will do in it to see if my amps on the lipo i'm using is where my power is lacking.

rexasso 01.10.2010 03:25 PM

I started building the Ste today but have an issue with the servo. I cannot pulg the drive link to the servo.
The link will touch the servo while turning.

Need to look to other set up.

S o I didn't have the chance to put the body on it
