which charger for freind?
 

hey guys a freind wants to buy my brushless setup along with a few lipos but doesnt want to spend a whole lot on a charger..

i found a few on hobby city that might should be good

It really depends.

If he definitely will not upgrade batteries in the future and he is sure he won't get any other vehicles, then get whatever works for the batteries he has now. Makes no sense to get more than he needs.

But, if he even thinks about playing around with batteries or different vehicles, I would suggest getting something a little more future-proof. Always cheaper to buy right once than to end up buying twice.

i have that charger and it is great except for mine has a problem with balancing my 4s lipo. it has no problems with any of my other 10 or so batteries, it just won't charge my 4s right. it can charge 10a @200W.

I agree with BrianG. Always go for something that will hold up to the future. (a) battery technology is advancing fast, and cells will only get higher capacity and faster charging rates (b) the RC bug is very addictive, your friend may not think he'll need to charge larger, higher voltage cells, but before you know it he could have 3 new vehicles that all use 6S 5000mah lipos!

I use the iCharger 106B+ and it works great; plenty of power, accurate balancing, USB connectivity for monitoring and graphing charge stats. There are also other iCharger models that can handle higher wattages. Any charger in the iCharger line-up is a good choice. A-main carries them under their in-house "Pro-Tek" line for close to the same price as HC, and you wouldn't have to pay the international shipping.

Also, make sure the power supply is capable enough. Those AC/DC converters that look like typical laptop chargers usually don't handle more than a few amps.

I definetly agree with you guys about going for the best.. i myself have the hyperion 1210 i with the lba10 and i know this isnt the most expensive hyperion but its a legit setup..

my buddy isnt down to throw 120-150 for a charger because he may not be in the hobby for as long as me.. I think im going to go with one of the middle ones just for his sake and see how it goes..

When i told him a decent charger is 80 and a good charger is 150 he flipped out.. he wants something for like 50 bucks..

If he flipped out about the price of a charger, I don't think this is the hobby for him...

he just wants a cheap setup for now..

i dont mean he literally flipped out, but just said he doesnt wanna spend that much.

i figure if he gets a decent setup (nice little rustler) maybe once he realizes how sick the hobby is then hell upgrade n stuff

I know the "cheap setup first, then upgrade later" sounds reasonable, but you are really better off buying higher quality stuff the first time around. If he buys good quality gear and doesn't like the hobby he can sell it, and the quality gear will hold it's resale value better than cheap stuff. If he likes the hobby then he can buy more vehicles but will already have a solid Tx/Rx setup, charger, batteries, etc.

As was already said, this hobby isn't cheap. To do it right, and get the most out of it with least headaches and problems you have to be willing to drop a bit of cash.

Knowing what I know now, if I had to start from scratch I'd get a nice clean used slash roller, Mamba Max or MMP (used from member here) Velineon motor, Spektrum radio setup (Losi 2.4 tx/rx, tx can be upgraded, rx all still spektrum compatible) and Zippy/Turnigy lipos with one of the better HobbyCity chargers (iCharger again).

You can buy whatever you like if you giving to him as a gift or anything else. It does
not important that you should spend more than you afford. You can give him charger
which you like because it depends on you.
