5mm connectors

I was over mikes place last night - putting together some stuff and was wondering - Even with the 5.5mm connectors - the connectors are still not big enough to get both motor wires on. So what is the difference between running the 2 wires to each plug ( besides resistance) - or soldering the 2 wires together extremely close to the speed controller and soldering one wire to the motor. Like this

-----------\
Motor wire 1 |============( to motor ) Single Wire
Motor wire 2 /
----------/

The wires are going to be 3.5 inches long at most. It seems like a connection that was 3.5 would get you the same result in this case ( short connection wires )

I don't think it will make much of a difference since the wire's are so short.

Thats what i was thinking also - It just is so much cleaner with 3 wires instead of 6.. Wonder what serum and dafni think?....

Sneeck 03.26.2006 09:57 AM

Yes thats true. But you could use some sort of housing around the 6 wire's. I don't know, if you screw up the solder job you need to take the heatshrink off and resolder the wire's. Not to mention soldering close to the esc is not a very good thing I recon. The wire may get so hot that the solder on the esc board might come loose. Or damage other component's.

I agree with ya - it is close to the speed controller - I will have to hone my soldering skills for this one. ( good thing i live close to mike if mess it up - or rather - Maybe ill just do it at his shop... LOL ) But this will have to be done another day - I would hope that he takes today off and spends some quality time with his woman... ( but knowing him he will probably be packing orders and emailing etc....)

The 5.5's where big enoug to hold my 2 cables coming from my 9920? Patience is the key..

the thing is; you want to keep the resistance as low as possible, and i personally hate it to cut of the wires too close to the esc, you know, once you cut them off, there is no turning back.. (without not harming the warrantee) I am a big fan of as less soldering points in the circuit as possible.. (keeps the R as low as it can be)

OK - thanks for the input - I guess we will have to see - depends on the motor and all -

Hey, I had a similar problem and what I did was twist the wires together (tight) and then tin them. Then use a knife to sharpen the wires like a pencil until it will fit. It worked for me. good luck

Thanks - getting it done i fear wont be hard - getting it to look sweet and represent - that will be the hard part - but i know ill get it -

I had that exact same question when my 20120 came in. And it looks like someone else has that question too: http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2643.

As to soldering the wires together and then to another wire (like a "Y"), I'd use some 10 or 8 gauge wire easily available from any car stereo shop. That's actually a good idea if it's done right.

Once a method is worked out, maybe sticky it?

The double wires frustrate the hell out of me,i could never fit both into a 5.5mm plug so end up with them soldered to each other (one shorter than the other)then one to the plug, messy, and seems like the same resistance bottle neck as just one wire in the first place.

With the hi-amp lehner motors i just solder both wires straight to the windings.

I think im going to try it - I will experiment at the end of the 2 wires - ( if i mess up - im going to cut 1/2 of the wires off anyway ) I will probably use 8ga wire. It has got to look clean and neat. Maybe i will take a couple of pics and sticky if it works out.... Thats definately an idea
