Two FLM Savage Ext arm kits. whats' the difference?
Ext arm kit:
*Machined from billet 6061 aluminum *Extended .500" per side for improved handling *Extra hole was added for shock position *Lifetime warranty on driveshafts XL Ext Arm Kit: *Machined from billet 6061 aluminum *Extended .500" per side for improved handling *Extra holes added for shock position *Lifetime warranty on driveshafts The desc is exactly the same. price is same, picture is same. Part #'s are different, as is title. The only diff I can think of is the dogbone sizes, where the flux and XL have the larger ball. Pix are same, so its just a guess... Is there no longer ext kit? Ideally a 1" per side ext os what I'd like to see. Also, how do the LST shocks mount? I don't like the way they mount on the plastic arms, with long 3mm screws hanging away from the arm. The tend to take a lot of force and bend rather easy. |
how durable are the flm arms? are they worth the money? In some being cart wheels, are they going to bend??? Anyone have any experience?
Also how strong are the FLM Dog Bones for the XL Arms? |

As far as the mounting goes, I know what you are saying about the spacer. I actually used a ballend from my Revo parts instead as it had larger, flatter ends as the spacers included tended to dig into the plastic if the screws were tightened down hard. I used long screws all the way thru the shock ends to the back of the original shock mounts along with 3mm nuts. I also needed a spacer between the shock end and the arm so the shock spring did not rub the upper arm. I do have the adj arm kit, so IDK if this makes a diff (seems thicker) and even then the clearance is tight. The main point is the screw is only supported on one side, so on my heavy truck with strong springs, the 3mm screw bends down after some bashing. There doesn't seem enough meat in the mount to go to 4mm screws (tho may look again.) It would be nice to have the shock screws supported on both sides to even the load and prevent the easy bends. |
Yeah, I found out the hard way about the larger cups - bought the FLM bulks, and due to the lack of good description and my lack of knowledge, ended up with the wrong ones. Not sure why the larger cups make a difference in the arms though. Very convoluted, IMHO.
Can't disagree with you on how it would be nice to have it better contained. Have you looked at the Savage extension kit? It's realatively cheap - I've been running mine since the Flux was about 2 months old, and haven't suffered any ill consequences yet. |
Well I converted my Sav XL, didn't have a flux, so I already had the longer length. Def worth having.
The arm sets are important as it includes a custom ext dogbone, which needs to fit the drive cups also. It is frustrating the lack of detail and desc on some of the FLM stuff. Feels like the puzzles my kids have in their books where you are trying to spot the differences, but there are no answers in the back. lol I got the FLM bulks too (for the XL fortunately) and will be changing to the HPI BP diff set from the Cen diffs I have know as I blew another pinion gear. I like the Cen internals better, but the R&P are made of cheap cast metal and tend to break far easier than they should. The solid bulk case and hardened BP diff should make a very sturdy gearset. I hope so at least as I don't want to be opening up these diffs often! |
