Anyone seen this site before?

http://www.spokeo.com/

Curious how accurate it is...?

It had a scary amount of information on us....We requested removal.

bumsnogger 04.22.2010 07:19 AM

Hi guys,I'd steer clear,it just told me to reboot the computer!

^^^ You may have existing issues?

I have a gmail account which was accurate although not detailed. Don't think it holds anything sensitive unless you live in the US...

And you have to watch some of those sites; just the act of contacting them to remove your data may be giving them current contact info they can sell to marketing people. No matter what is or isn't there can be easily gotten by other means anyway, so removing your data from that one site doesn't mean you're safe.

Is it still legal to sell private/personal info in the US!?

This type of site & personal info gathering is illegal in Aus, compiling it for sale...you'd be expecting some form of legal recourse against you

BrianG 04.22.2010 03:46 PM

Not sure, but since when have laws stopped the shady characters from doing whatever they want to do? Assume the worst and all surprises will be good ones...

sounds like a fishing site, I'm using trend micro and it blocked the site before it popped up warning me it has been reviewed as is not safe

BrianG 04.22.2010 03:59 PM

Just playing around on the net, you can find all sorts of info. Some things are public records (property assessor records, telephone, address, etc); some take a little more digging (white pages, facebook, forum profiles, etc). But it's all out there, and this spokeo site is just a place that has already done the digging and is willing to sell the data to cover their research.

BTW: Some of the info on that site is correct, some used to be correct, and some is totally off base.

Sad notion that some people see that as a legitimate way to derive income from their country...

A quick jack of the thread...been a lot of news articles in the local Sydney press suggesting uncertain times ahead for the US
