want to get it right this time!

ok......this is my set up medusa 2300kv motor until it burnt up over the weekend hobbywing 150a esc and 2 2s 7.4 5000mah lipos gearing was 13/46 bumped it up to 16/46 set the timing to 11.25 from 15 degrees would like to keep the 16/46 gearing but thinking of switching to something different for a motor maybe 1600-1900 kv? i don't know what motor temps were but the smoke trail coming out through the end bell told me enough! HELP!!!

Should have checked the temp aftyer a couple minutes after changing your setup. What Medusa motor was this, 36-60-2300, 36-70-2300, or 36-80-2300. 16/46 is very high gearing for that setup. That's about 50MPH when allowing for some ballooning of the tires, 47 without any. I run a CC/Neu 2200kv in my truggy so the kv is close and I run it on 4s lipo as well but my gearing is 54/15. I can still keep up with the nitros on the straight and out power them everywhere else. Problem with your setup is most likely the gearing and an udersized motor. For the cost vs quality I would suggest getting a CC/Neu, $140 from RC-Monster last I checked. And lower your gearing!!!

sorry should have said it was a 36-70-2300 and its a converted cen matrix tr i started out with 13/46 but noticed that the gear mesh was wrong due to the motor mount the screws were over as far as i could no way a 12 or 11 tooth pinion could be used only way i could use anything smaller is to change the spur gear to a 50 tooth maybe? thanks for the help so far!!!!

going to purchase a new motor and a 50 tooth spur and try my 12 or 13 tooth pinion instead let me know what you think of the combo?

E-Revonut 05.25.2010 01:22 PM

Use the speed calculator in BrianG's signature, very useful tool! If you get the CC/Neu motor and use a 50t spur a 14-15t pinion should be just about right depending on your track.

truggyracer1 05.25.2010 01:29 PM

thanks man our track is tight just enough room for a truggy i'm gonna try to use the calculator and figure this out!

Tight track then 50/13 might work well. You could also always go for something with a lower kv value and gear it up a bit if necessary. The cc/neu 1518 might be a bit better, it's 1800kv and it's a got a bit more torque than the 1515 2200kv so should handle an over geared truck a bit better without heating up so much and a properly geared truck it should stay pretty cool. Not sure if RC-Monster is carrying the other size CC/Neus or if you have to go to Castle directly or if any other distributors have them.

All the castle motors are available in the RCM store.

Good to know. I was posting from my phone and didn't want to take the time to look to see if they where

truggyracer1 05.25.2010 05:41 PM

as posted in the castle section i have a 1518 1y on order and a associated 50 tooth plastic spur gonna try my 13t pinion with it and see what i get for temps thanks for all the help!!!!

nitrostarter 05.25.2010 05:43 PM

I run 15/50 on my 1518 on 5s. It consistently runs 120*F.

truggyracer1 05.25.2010 05:51 PM

i run 4s how much of a difference is that going to be? i have a 16t giving me 16/50 will that still get me 120 temps?

truggyracer1 05.26.2010 01:49 PM

ok guys just a update i have a plastic associated 50t spur coming and a castle/neu 1518 1y on order i have a 12t,13t and a 16t pinion to try i could pick up a 15t?

bdebde 05.26.2010 03:25 PM

Use BrianG,s speed calculator, gear for mid 30's. Looks like you will be about 33mph with 16t pinion on 4s (not including tire balooning), probably about right for a small track. Going up 1 tooth on pinion will put you about 35, usually what I shoot for on the small indoor track I run on.

truggyracer1 05.26.2010 04:50 PM

ok i messed around with brian's calc at bit and depending on batt voltage looks like 50/16 gearing will get me a speed of around 32 MPH tht should be good enough for our track going to a 18t pinion is about 35 depending on bat voltage again sounds good to me!!!
