Mechanical Brakes with RCM Universal CD Mount?
I am going to be purchasing this mount from the store for my savage CD conversion. But ireally want to keep my mech brakes as i prefer them and it keeps the strain on the ESC dowm...
i have only used mech brakes on my savage tranny... and i am a little unsure as to what Diff mounts are able to utilise mech brakes... And if they are not able to utilise mech brakes are there any mods you think i can do in order to get it to work? Anyone ever considered putting hydraulic disc brakes on a savage? is it possible? |
Got mine yesterday, it has mounting holes for the brake pads. Not sure how to mount a brake cam yet tho. Have to think about it.

Thanks for responding to this thread... Doesnt seem like many people use mechanical brakes anymore.
I know its a little more work but imo its 100x better than motor brakes which dont have a nice feel and cause potential ESC failure... At least its good to know that they have mountng holes for the pads but if there is no brake cam hole then it seems as if it is not possible? Are there other ways around this do you think??? |
I really don't think it's possible, especially on the motor side. It's possible you could rig something up on the non motor side, but then you're stuck with either front or rear brakes depending on how you position the motor.
You could spool the center diff and have both brakes (if you fabricate a cam) but that negates the attributes of the differential. As far as the "feel" of esc brakes, atleast with a castle esc you can program them for any feel you like, and as long as you have good batteries you dont have to worry about braking killing the esc.(with a proper setup) I hope I didn't disappoint you, but that's what I see. |
If you don't mind front or rear only, think about mounting something on the yoke to the (f/r) diff.

the problem is if i do my 9s setup, i must wait for the caslte hv car version so i can utilise brakes and reverse...
I guess i could just use front brakes but i do not like the idea... Im still looking at a hydraulic or wire brake setup but its looking a little difficult. Are there any other ESCs which have braking and reverse as castle hasnt released theres yet? THanks |
To be honest, once you actually try ESC/Motor brakes, and get used to them, you will wonder why you ever liked mechanical brakes in the first place...trust me, I have been there, I know. I know there is a lot of personal opinion here, but most people, if not all people, will say that they actually prefer ESC/Motor brakes over mechanical brakes.
ESC/Motor brakes are infinitely adjustable, and can be adjusted far more, far more easily, and far more precisely than mechanical brakes...not to mention they never, ever, ever fade, or wear out, or need re-adjusting because of wear. I know a lot of people are "used" to the mechanical brakes of their nitro vehicle and have a hard time letting go of them when they finally decide to go brushless, but once they do let them go, they quickly realize that mechanical brakes actually suck compared to ESC/Motor brakes. But, if you have to have that mechanical brake feel, ESC/Motor brakes can be adjusted to act and feel just like mechanical brakes, minus the fade and wearing out part. Chad, you are probably right. Maybe i didnt give my motor brakes enough of a chance.
I think someone mentioned that those holes were possible for the brake pads, but i doubt it as there is no location for fitting a brake cam. Using mech brakes gave me peace of mind about overloading the ESC, but i guess once i go 9s and use an HV castle system, it should be able to handle any spikes in current regenerated much better than the current MMM (my lipos are up to the task too, Hyperion 35c 6500mah). I also doubt that mech brakes are going to stand up to the high heat temps generated when im using 9s and doing speed runs... What do most people set their ESCs braking at? I want to be able to slam on the brakes and prevent the truck flipping. Is that around 30%? |
Those holes are just for fixturing when he machines the parts. Not meant for Mechanical brakes.
