Brushless motor technical terms
What do I need to know about brushless motors for very high rpm and massive power/torque?
Kv, Kt, watts, volts??? |
kv is RPM/volt, kt is the torque constant (multiplied by amps it will give torque), watts is power, volts are potential difference (difference from + to -) of your batteries
|
I know the basics about it, I want to know is it better to go high rpm less torque or vice versa
Should I only look at the kv? or should I only look at the wattage? I need a motor with lots of grunt. |
Most people run larger motors at a lower rpm and 'gear up' to take advantage of the torque. Unfortunately, most companies only issue info on the kv of motors and not the kt. Ideally you should aim to keep you motor in the 35,000-40,000rpm mark. What application are you using your motor in?

So kt is more important to a motor than kv?
I was after just the motor now for speed around 80mph+ in a 1/10 touring car it’s a severely (personally) modified carbon fiber and aluminum car I can put a brushless motor larger than a 550 size in it, I don’t know what speed control I’m going to use until I get the motor. I prefer to run it up to 14.4v or up to 8 cell lipo or what ever it takes to push it. I was thinking about the novak GTB-4.5 setup but I don’t think its enough. What about something like lehner basic xl 5000? |
A 5000xl on 3s lipo would be an awsome setup. But personally I would go for the 3600xl on 4s lipo. Either set-up would easily achieve 60mph, and probably 80mph aswell. Personally I would choose the 3600xl and 4s lipo, because the 5000xl will be a bit hard on the controller and batts especially.
A GTB 4.5 might do 50mph, or maybe more - I havn't seen one in action. The problem with the GTB is it only handles 6 cells, and there's only so much power 6 cells can dish out. 3s/4s lipo is the way |
Would a XL 5000 and a HV-MAXX esc running 14.4v @ 4200 work? It won’t matter if the run time is lower, all I want to do is: say my car can go 80mph+
|
The HV-Maxx is only compatible with the Novak and LRP motors...

What ESC would suit the XL5000? |
It is incompatible because the HV-Maxx requires sensored brushless motors.
For a controller for the XL5000, you may want to look at the Warrior 12120, it should suffice. |

Is there a website for warrior? |
Mike does sell it:
