Castle Blower on Dewalt Motor in Summit?
 

Hey guys, went the Dewalt 14.4V route for my Summit, and geared 18/68 after a 30 minute bash I was getting temps of 70-75C on the motor (granted the motor had an outwears on it.) That's a bit high for my taste, so have since gone down to a 16t, pulled the Outerwears and put on a CC Blower (being the only fan that actually fit the Dewalt's huge can.

BUT

Am I going to retain more heat through the Plastic Shroud, than I will move with the Fan? ie, do the costs outweigh the benefits of this set up?

Any ideas?

I have always been a fan of the clip on al heatsinks, if the motor is not finned. I feel they are good for about a 10f drop. The lower gearing on the dewalt should help, most likely more than the fan will.

So the case of the blower is plastic? It is designed to go on a cc 2200 motors, correct? So it is supposed to move air over the fins on that motor. I would put an al clip on heatsink on the dewalt, and then if you do not have much moving air under the body, put a fan blowing over that to dissipate the heat that the al heatsink pulls out.

Ya the CC blower is plastic. I thought it was aluminum when I bought it, but its not. I saw an explanation and its only meant to run air over a Castle 2200 motor which is already finned. All the black plastic does is keep the fan in place above the motor. I would guess you are going to retain heat with the plastic shroud.

If you have a smooth can motor the CC blower isnt going to do much. I tested an 80mm fan over a smooth can feigao and it really didnt do much. Linc's idea is good. An aluminum heatsink will do best. I have tested and tested trying to keep my feigao motor temps down and that works the best for me. If you want the extra cooling then a fan or two on that and it will work wonders. During winter all I need is the heatsink by itself. During summer I need the heatsink and fans.

Here is a link for what you should be looking for. This will work wonders on temps as long as you have a little air flow over them.
If you look at my avatar, that was my pathetic attempt to keep my feigao cool with an 80mm fan.

Yeah see ordinarily I'd put an Alloy Heatsink / Fan on it, but the Dewalt motor is huge, ie larger than a Titan 775 Brushed Motor, so I have been unable to find a metal heatsink that actually fits, hence the Castle option (and it just fits at a pinch, with a pair of very tight cable ties!)

IRRC a few people I know have had the dewalt in the 200+ range without damaging it...

Yeah, no question it's a tough motor, but I'd rather not push the envelope if I can at all avoid it :)
