Opening a Neu 1509 1.5D 4500kv
 

Hi guys,

I'm using this motor in combination with a Mamba Max on my Hyper Mini STe on 2S 5A 20C LiPo's. The only problem is that the ESC is running way to hot for my likings. I'm guessing this is because the car feels like it has massive drag.

So I changed the settings on the ESC to 0% dragbrake (what I always run) but I still felt no change. I removed the motor from the car and the roller was smooth. Conclusion: I think it's the motor. I have a 1512 2.5D 2050kv and a 1515 1Y 2200kv and both turn smoother than my 1509 when rotating the shaft.

So I was thinking the drag comes from the motor, so I wanted to take it apart to look inside but there's one little problem; I can't open it up :oh:

There are no screws what so ever, so how do I remove the endbell ?

Looks like an older model before they added screws to the rear endbell; you should be able to open it using the old feigao motor trick = bang the shaft against a hard table and the rear endbell will pop off. Sounds brutal, but its the only way...

That does sound brutal. What about getting it back on, should I use loctite/epoxy?

Will try it tomorrow .. Don't think my mom and dad will appreciate me banging the motor on a table @ 00:39 :)

Yeah, a few drops of CA glue or red/ green loctite ( which ever is the high temp variety ) will be fine to put it back on with, though some people go as far as drilling little holes and putting in new screws, just like on the rear of the the NeuCastle motors or vxl motors- depends if you do alot of jumping or crashing that might shock the motor and cause the endbell to pop off again..

I took the 1509 apart. While I was at it, I also took my 1515 apart. Do you see anything strange?

I can see some broken or loose strands or wire for sure ( assuming its not just dirt or bits of loose hair stuck to the stator ) at the rear end of the 1509, just under your finger @ 0.30-35 seconds. That may be the cause of your temp issues if theres a damaged winding or minor short.

The 1515 looks fine.

So the small superficial scratches on the 1515 rotor are no problem?

So those loose strands of wire can cause the extra friction in the motor, thus forcing the MM to pull more juice from the LiPo thus getting hot so fast? I will look at the motor some more today and try and make a few pics.

no the loose or broken strands will create a "hotspot" or point of increased resistance on that particular coil. in other words the current is choked down at that point causing excessive resistance or heat in so many words. have had this happen to some of my nue motors after a couple hundred races. nature of the beast i guess but the price we pay for awesome power. neu can rewind the stator for you think it was around $50 total last time i had it done. i bet the motor is just as hot if not hotter than the speedo when you run it right?

That's the strange thing ... the motor keeps very cool 40c / 104F max, the ESC however is at 65c / 149F within a few minutes.

I bought the car / motor / esc / servo from linc (havn't seen him around for a while btw). He bought the motor used with just a few hours on it, than he drove it for a few hours and I haven't even driven it for a few hours. The motor should be in pretty good state. He also got the problem that the ESC was getting very hot, also due to a low airflow in the Hyper Mini STe.

So I have/had two problems:
1. The rotor of the 1509 doesn't feel to spin freely compared to my Neu 1512 and 1515.
2. The ESC was getting very hot when used in my Hyper Mini STe, the motor kept cool.

1. if its just notchy feeling, I wouldnt worry too much about it- might just be the D wind vs a Wye wind.
2. thinking about it, thats a power hungry little motor for the MM to handle, I'd like to see it ran on a larger esc like the MMPro or MMM and see how much the esc heats up, if at all. Should be comparable to a medusa 50mm motor really that alot of guys run in these smaller trucks and truggies, but its been while since anyone has discussed their results for comparison...

Might try a little ~25-30mm 6v fan on the MM to help cool it down, cant hurt.

1. My 1512 D wind also feels much more smooth, also smoother than my 1515 Y wind.

2. It sure is. Think I will just install the MM on my MERV and keep the 1509 for my next impulsive car buy :)
