I think I made a mistake ordering a 1717/1Y 1500kv motor

I ordered from the motor clearance sale on CC's website. Looks like I got the heli version of the motor. The rotor is larger than 5mm. I'm afraid I made a mistake or hasty purchase. Hoping Patrick or someone from CC will respond.

What do I do now? Can I send it back and trade it for the car version? Do I need to order a 5mm rotor kit for it instead?

I want to run this in my D8Te converted truggy on 6S. I have the EliteRC motor mount for it, and the motor seems to fit despite how much larger it is in diameter. Not sure what pinion options I'll have though.

The pic is side by side with a 2200kv motor.

Yeah, you got the air version. The air version has a 6mm shaft, vented endbells, 1500kv, and motor wires are extensions of the coils (and are stiff). The car version is 1580kv and looks much more like your 2200 motor, but bigger.

There were inventory/boxing issues with the air and car version at Castle. Contact them and chances are they'll do a swap with no problems...

I know this wasn't an inventory issue. It was my fault for not noticing the details of the item I ordered.

Have you been happy with the air version? Any issue with the holes in the endbells and dirt?

Worst case scenario I can just use a plastic spur and a alloy pinion drilled out to 6mm.

Forgot to mention that I emailed Christy at CC. I'm going to wait until I hear back from her before I do anything with the motor. Right now I'm leaning toward exchanging it for the 1520/1Y 1600kv motor if that is an option she makes available to me.

Are you sure you ordered the wrong motor. CC sent out several Air 1717 motors to people that ordered Car versions.

Yeah, it was my mistake. It says Air on the invoice.

I got an email back from CC this morning. They said I could exchange it. Since I have this opportunity to make it right, I need some advice from everyone.

Should I go with the 1717 1580kv car version or the 1520 1600kv instead. The later is a bit smaller diameter and will likely fit with more clearance. Seems like 20kv difference really wouldn't be noticable.

The air version has flats milled into the can that provided some extra clearance from the chassis. I'm not sure that without the milled flats that the 1717 will fit.

Please advise.

I did not use the air version. But really, aside from the larger 6mm shaft, there is no difference between the "air version" of a CC motor and a "classic" Neu motor. Lots of us used/use Neu motors in our vehicles with no issues. Most people cover the vent holes, and maybe find a way to help support the stiff wires from excessive flex (jump landings and such). Just a matter of convenience really.

Pretty sure CC is out of the 1520, but you can ask.

Also, they got my invoice wrong, says AIR, even though the email confirmation of what I ordered says CAR for my 1717. Luckily I contacted them in time to get it corrected before it shipped out. Its supposed to arrive this week so we'll see if it really got fixed.

As for which motor. The 1717 will have more torque. The 20kv difference is negligible like you said. I think I read that the 1717 is amp hungry, but I'd think all of these larger motor are similar.

Looking on their website, it does appear they are out of the 1520 motors. They are no longer listed on the clearance page.

Looks like I'm sticking with the 1717.

That was an error - The inventory system was out of wack - thomas said that the 1520's will be back on sale again soon.

Cool, thanks for the comment. I'll ask for the 1520 on the note in the box, and take the 1717 if my first choice isn't available.

I read that they would send you the 5mm rotor if you wanted to keep the 1717.

I also read on the 1717 air you cant shorten the wires coming off the motor where the car version you can.

I ordered the car versions as well and my invoice said air and I got the air version. They were very helpful and are sending me new motors.
