Motor getting way to hot in seconds (gearing maybe?)

ok ive just wired my new motor up its an 8XL when i tested it out of the car it got reall hot and smoke actually came from where the wires come out after a few seconds (dont think thats anything to worry about full throttle with no load will make it hot) so i put it in the truck thinking the load would help and it did but it still gets to hout i just drove it on and off on my drive for about a minute only small bursts of speed and going slow checking temp in between. and after a min in was getting really hot (still tuchable just) so i figure when i run it proerly it will burn its self out.

the controller dosent get noticibly hot at all and ive read that if its just the motor im undergearing it its a 14 pinion and 51 spur with super maxx gears

so im assuming (and hoping) that im way out whith the gearing so any sujestions on how i should gear it or what else it could be?

That sounds undergeared to me - how many cells are you running? You might have burnt the windings when the motor smoked, but hopefully not.

running 16 cells it burnt when i first tested it with no load its still working so i assume its ok if the windings had burnt it wouldnt go at all would it?

what gearing do you recomend starting at? ill have to order them means another 2 weeks wait to get them in the UK :(

There's definitely something wrong with your motor or the connections. My guess is that the motor screws are too far in and hitting the windings. Otherwise the motor is not spinning freely or the timing on the controller is set too high. (You should set it to about 5 degrees timing)

Smoke is no good sign..

When it smoked with no load, it won't get any better.

Check the screws, like SpeedyBL says.
