Kyosho DRX brushless conversion

Hi All! New here, also kinda new in RC cars.
I was looking for a rally RC car, something that can act more like a real rally car. First I looked at the Tamaya DF-03Ra. It looked great but it just didn't seem to have the power I was looking for, and it looked very limited in how much power it could take. Then I saw the Kyosho DRX, it looked like what I am looking for. It's large, built like a true 1/8 with central diff and has the rally appeal. So I decided to get one and convert it into brushless. First I had to decide on which motor to go with. I was looking at the Mamba Max Pro SCT 2400kv version, but I really didn't like the fact it has a 3mm shaft. So I went with Castle 2650kv motor, it's definitely an overkill for this light, 5.5 lib car. But I figured I should try, I want this car to be able to lose traction on the corners by adding more power :). Coupled to the 2650 I bought the HobbyKing 150A ESC. It should do and it's quite cheap. I plan to use this Turnigy 5000mAh 3S 35C Lipo battery. I am going to use the DBX VE motor mount and I might also use the DBX VE RX box. So the next step is drilling to mount the motor... I'll do that in a few days. Attachment 9762 Everything new has to be inspected... Attachment 9764 Attachment 9766 Attachment 9767 |
Rims and tires are sweet, looks like it will be a blast when its done. Ive always wanted a rally car.

Made some progress today. This motor is way too big for this mount, I had to create some room for it to fit.
Attachment 9769 I was planning to have the mount screws to enter from the bottom, but the motor is so large the nuts don't fit :). This thing is going to be a monster... So the nuts are hanging from the bottom, not very slick but it works. Attachment 9770 Next I made a rear rest thing for the motor, it's from the DBX VE so I used it. It too had to be fitted for this large motor (+ room for a screw on the motor). Attachment 9771 This is the result. I am still waiting for that HK ESC. This is going to be cool... Attachment 9772 |
Are the mounting holes for the motor mount in the chassis slotted? If they are, as simple as that mount is I would cut my own out of a peice of alum. angle and then tap the hole in the mount so you can you a flat head screw so its flush with the chassis. They way it is now works but I think if you will be running on pavement before you know it the nuts will be ground down to nothing.

Thanks... Yeah, that might be a problem. I think I'll try to cut one side of the nuts to make room on the mount.

Right, so I got the ESC and took it out for a run. I am using a 3S 2200 battery for now because I didn't know if I wanted to go with 3s or 4s. Now I know. I'll go with 3s. It's has so much power! I had to use stronger CA on the wheels - the flexible one I used just wasn't strong enough.
Here is a sample, really bad filming and driving - I had to do both at the same time. I am not even close to full throttle here. YouTube - Kyosho DRX brushless Overall, I am very happy with the motor. It always has more power even at the higher end. I can do power slides on tarmac just by pushing the throttle just a bit and of it goes. Just like the real thing. Full throttle is just plain mad, it is very hard to stop it after that :). I hope to make a better video with a better camera soon. |
Fresh video... I really like how it runs with this motor.

Was testing it on tarmac today, looks like a very heavy oil is needed in the center diff, all that power is just spinning the front wheels. I am thinking 5 front, 10 center and 7 back.
