What does everybody else use for misc. oil?
 

Oil for your bearings.. you sick minded :whistle:

Anyways, I usually always have a little can, or bottle of bearing oil that I use on misc. stuff... Like you know, on bearings? :lol:

I've been using this Trinity Royal Purple Oil or whatever, since I bought like 5 of them awhile back for about 1-2 bucks a pop..

Stuff works wonders on my bearings in my skateboards (spin the wheels, spray some oil in, and a nice serving of it, and let it finish spinning..), also works pretty well when after cleaning up some fresh rust on screws, drop a bit of oil on them again to help prevent rusting..

Since I'm on my last bottle, wondering what everybody else uses now, WD40?

do NOT use WD40...

I use the real deal, Royal Purple motor oil. 5w-30 is what I put in my truck, suv and car and the leftovers are for my RC. Royal Purple gear oil in my Rustler shocks.

Bearings.
 

Most if not all of my bearings are sealed bearings anyway, so using any kind of oil seems pretty much pointless to me. If the bearings are sealed then they are packed with grease before we get them. So spraying WD-40 or soaking them in oil is only going to degrade the grease that is already in them to keep them moving. That is if the oil can even seep into the sealed bearings at all. WD-40 is the worst thing anyone can use, because of its penetrating properties it will get into cracks and crevises and destroy the grease. Plus the problem with WD-40 is that it disapates quickly leaving bearings to be destroyed faster.

If you want to clean up old dirty used bearings it might be best to use and ultrasonic cleaner on them, and then soak them in some sort of heavy oil that can help. Otherwise for a $1 a bearing at Avid it may be best to just replace your bearings periodically to keep your vehicles running their very best. I still use stainless steel sealed bearings from VXB, which is where most of the R/C manufacturers & suppliers get their bearings from.

I use that Trinity stuff. Great on motors, and generally all metal-shielded bearings.

I use WD40 to clean some things (mainly dirty screws and stuff).
I use house hold 3-in-1 oil when I rebuild bearings.
cheap and it works, I try not to stick it anywhere it will collect dirt though.

Really!!! you rebuild the tiny R/C bearings?? Man that is just too teteous for me to bother with. I guess I am just getting old.

Well, I just pop off the rubber seals, spray them out with a degreaser (electronic cleaner, brake cleaner, other carcinogens, etc) then put a drop of 3-in-1 on them and call it good. If that doesn't cure the rough feeling then I consider retiring them. The Jang has a decent vid on youtube on how to do it.

I feel the same way. I don't think it's age so much as there are better uses for my time.

And BTW, it's "tedious". :wink:

See I told you I am getting old.:lol: Spelling is becoming less and less important these days, but I do try.:intello: This is why I became a Mechanical Engineer in the first place, and not an English major.:whistle: I'm still not wasting my time cleaning out 8mm bearings to save a dollar.:na: Like you said I have better things to do with my time.:yes: Thats just me.

If I had a nice set of ceramics I'd consider spending time cleaning them, but for the same price I can buy and throw out like 3-4 sets of steel bearings, so that's what I do.

Musicians oil. For valves and junk, has a nice needle nose on it and the stuff works really well on the bearings I do clean. Most crapped bearings get tossed. If I don't have a spare I'll clean it.
