What kind of adhesion promoter did you use ?

Hyper-5 04.28.2011 10:16 AM

um can't really remember, but the paint was for metal, so the oaint came up orite, really shinny when u see it up close though

l was just experimenting on how the buggy would look with those alloy parts painted bright red

Bondonutz 04.28.2011 10:26 AM

It does look pretty good,The red really Pops.

I'm just concerned with adhesion on aluminum parts especially if they were anodized. It's likey the paint will not stick well without some sort of adhesion promoter IE acid/etching primer-Zinc phosphate etc.

at first it wasnt really sticking well, but after 3 coats worked really well, but lm only experimenting, l will be doing more but this time, l am trying to find Dupli Colour Metal Specks, which is a metalic red, really nice, but ldk if they sell it in Sydney AUS

Pretty cool video, qaulity was nice in HD.

Just a thought, there a number of places that will do anodizing for fairly reasonable rates. 1offRC did some stuff for a member here (CowRC) and the stuff looks great. Might cost a bit more than painting yourself (or maybe not if you need specialty paint, adhesion promoter, etc.?)

Otherwise, I've been looking into doing some DIY anodizing at home, started a thread on it here. Process is fairly simple, main hazard being working with the chemicals involved.

Hyper-5 04.29.2011 12:04 AM

l found that Dupli colour metal specks paint is good for metal parts, but l am not sure if they sell it were l live

Bondonutz 04.29.2011 10:08 AM

You can use several different kinds of paint but the main factor involved is metal prep and a primer/adhesion promotor in order for ther paint to stick well because the aluminum is so "slick". Prep is super important here.

With mounting hardware,nuts/bolts etc the paint will be prone to chipping just from assembly. The anodizing is a much sounder idea since the coating is basically a "stain" (very thin film) rather than a material thats built up on the aluminum for a even coat.

Maybe looking into deanodizing and polishing the stock ones or look for aftermarket towers in a different color or as Simplechump said look into DIY anodizing but be careful !

orite, lm considering of painting the chassis red now, just to see what it would look like, if l don't like it l'll just swap it with my other chassis, but this time lm going to be looking at either White Knight paint or Dulux, White Knight might be better, but this time lm going to do a clear coat on it to.

Bondonutz 04.29.2011 10:29 AM

When and if you paint anything aluminum and want it to stick, use something like this.

Clear coat is unnessasary and the more material you put on the chances of it chipping will be higher, just use a quality spray enamel and follow instructions. Use a red scotchbrite pad and throughly rough up alminum prior to prime and paint.

l don't think we have that brand or spray paint in australia, and how many grains is the red scotch brite pad?
