BL Savage?
Ok I keep seeing BL Savy's with tranny's how do you keep the brake? and do they shift correctly etc.. I ask because I have a Savage with FLM lowered and extended chassis along with servo plate and center skid. I can't decide whether to keep the tranny or use an Ofna Dominator center diff mounted directly to the center skid? I say dominator diff because it has a slipper.

The Dominator is just a center slipper and aren't really anything special. There was a direct replacement for the Dominators (came on another truck) that was an actual diff. That would be the way to go but in that case you can use any diff. I would go for a ofna diff and a ofna 51 tooth plastic spur so a hardened pinion isn't necessary. With the diff a slipper isnt really necessary. If you do deside to go with the tranny just leave the brakes hooked up as it were nitro and set the esc to forward only without brakes. That will allow you to use the mechanical brakes. There is something with the throttle mixing on the radio that is anther option but im not exactly clear on what that does.

I am leaning towards a bl savy with a 3 speed.
I want the trans for it has a lower ratio for going slow and still have speed for getting down in speed runs. The diff would work nice for tighter turning. |
I still have the stock tranny and mech. brakes in my Savage, just with the tranny locked in first gear.

Leroy; i would make that savage nice and light, with a 6S lipo and such as a 1930 lehner motor or a low KV wanderer L. I am going to do some testing in my maxx with 6S lipo and a small motor too, only 1 speed though, that 3 speed will add an extra dimension. Heck, i got enough savages to hang it in.. I am anxiously waiting for your results buddy! The 2 speed transmission on the savage is not too tough, The weak spot is the 2nd speed gear, luckily HPI made a modification for it, which they sell by the name 'heavy duty 2nd speed' with that, the transmission is tough as nails. the K4,6SS bytheway comes standard with that hopup. When you want to use both the mechanical brakes and the speedcontroller on 1 channel, you can simple use an Y-cable between the receiver and the speedo/brakeservo I love the savage with a 2 speed. i have got the locked shaft too, which enables me to use it in first or 2nd (i need to take the transmission apart though) so far, i like the 2speed with the mechanical brakes the best. |
I took the two speed out of mine, it is just second gear. but I love it. I seem to have a problem with the rear differentials. I am on my second one.

I like the center diff over the 2 speed. Because with the 2 speed you have the moment of shifting. On that point is always a little tick and a boost in speed. With the center diff the speed is going up very smoothly. No ticks or boosts. The center diff is also much lighter than the 2 speed. It also lowers the CG of the truck. And I really don't like the breaks of the 2 speed. Because I can't get my breaking linkage right. When I hit the throttle, there is always a little braking.

With a 2speed you have got a harder acceleration and a nice top-speed.
That tick you are talking about wasn't noticable on my plettenberg powered savage. Both have got advantages, for a pur sang monstertruck i prefer the 2speed. and the other points you are describing Jasper; you do know what your slipper can do? I made a perfect linkage, with a slider that was released once it was going to WOT. Just some tinkering... But all and all, i think it is well worth the effort. |
