My MMM died today

Plugged in my batts and the ESC armed. 30 odd seconds later white smoke rises from the ESC. One of the caps has blown. I updated to 1.32 the other day and did the torque control, besides that it has just been sitting in the car for the past week.

Far fetched perhaps but is there any way it's related to the FW update? It has been running flawlessly for 11 months.

Probably not a FW issue -- how old are the batteries? It sounds to me like the batteries are weak and damaged the input capacitors.

Just a theory...

Ahhhh nobody like to hear about bateries! Sorry guys I thought it was funny after hearing so much about it on another forum. Sorry to hear about your luck. Sometimes stuff just fails too. Personally I haven't had any issues with updating firmware on any of my cc controlers but then again I've been shut down for a few months cause of where I'm working and my stuff is hibernating for a while. Wouldn't worry though cc will help you get it all worked out.

They have less than 10 cycles on them. Turnigy 3s nano-tech 5000mah 35-70c and Turnigy 2s 5000mah 40c. Balance is within 0.01v according to my iCharger 106B. Haven't checked the IR on them but if it's of any interest I'll hook em up to the charger and give you the numbers.

I just remembered something I forgot to mention in my initial post. I've changed the fan since the original one came apart. Fan was working now but is it possible that I've damaged the ESC with heat prior to changing the fan and this caused the ESC to fail? The fan died last week during a bash session. I check the fan every time I plug in my packs but like I stated it died while running my 6T so I didn't notice until the same day I did the upgrade.

@slimthelineman hehe, yeah I've read numerous posts about batteries and MMM's as well. Not worried about the warranty part, just trying to avoid having a new one die on me.

Probably not a battery issue. Please be aware that the real lifetime of Lipos is about 200-300 cycles ... after that, ESC damage can slowly occur.

Probably not -- the MMM has temperature protection, so if it gets too hot it will shut down.

Maybe it just had a weak capacitor, that decided to give it up...

In any case, contact our tech support and I'm sure they will be able to take care of you.

Thank you!

Patrick

Thanks for being active in supporting us customers Patrick. It's a rare thing these days!

I'll be sending it in for a checkup. I'll just abuse my Hobbywing ESC while waiting :)

I feel for ya. My MMM died awhile back and just recently got the chance to send it on to CC but unfortunately they are out of stock. They have had mine two days shy of three weeks now and haven't gotten an update since the 30th of last month. I have been dying to drive my ERBE recently but alont with waiting for a new ESC to arrive I will also be buying new batteries to go along with it.

Tell me about it. They've had my MMM, Mamba XL, and 1717 since the 18th of July... still nothing. I'm going to end up selling my rollers before I get these back.

j.f.s 08.25.2011 03:07 AM

Whoa, are these replacements within the warranty period or ordinary replacement/repairs?

These are warranty replacements. I was told 3 weeks and then was told a little longer since there is new model versions coming out.

j.f.s 08.25.2011 09:56 AM

Thanks for letting me know. Keeping my fingers crossed that they'll start shipping soon, especially to guys like yourself whom have waited over a month already.

LiqrSicc 08.25.2011 05:52 PM

Well, good news, I got an email response from Charles at Castle. Bad news, the MMM is still a few more weeks out. For those with a Mamba XL we just got shitted on. There is an delay at the factory with no eta. Not sure I want to buy another ESC while I wait so right now I'm limited to running my scte only =(

bruce750i 08.26.2011 01:55 PM

Fudge, thanks for the update. They've had my XL for a few months already.
