A123
Just a quick, easy question for those in the know. Is a 4s A123 pretty much the same as a 4s Lipo? I mean, comparable power and runtime? Any reason to do one or the other? Because the price is also comparable.
|
the lipo will have much more power ............. and if you buy turnigy nano tech you will have the same cicles of live than the a123 and the power of the lipos
|
Bear in mind that the voltages are slightly different. Lipo is 3.7v nominal, 4.2v fully charged. Life is 3.3v nominal, 3.6v fully charged.
|
3s lipo have MUCH MORE power than 4s a123 ...... and 1/3 lighter
|
EXACTLY what battery are you comparing?
IIRC A123 = 2300mah @ ~40C = 92A * 13.2 (4s) =1214 watts Lipo??? eg- 3000mah @ 25C =75A * 14.8 (4s) =1110 watts So it is important to look at the specs before buying a battery. |
I comparing the "normal" 9-11usd a123cells and a lipo battery with a similar price .... I dont need show anything ...... simply you need compare ....... the lipo have MUCH more power and is better in all .... price, amperaje, weight, dimensions etc ..... and have the same live-cycle
I had more than 40 a123 cells from dewalt 36v, buyers from ebay and other stores ..... and I know what I speak :D http://cgi.ebay.es/4-A123-systems-ba...item43a97d2d72 http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...Lipo_Pack.html |
Have A123s advanced much since they first came on the scene?
I used them at first for a while, but don't see much of a reason to go back. |
Unfortunately, no. I believe I saw some in flat pack form, but they were still larger than equivalent spec'd lipo's, and still the same output.
|
The hobbyking LiFepo4 are essentially the prismatic version of A123s, but feedback wasn't all that great for them around here ( puffed during use & storage, need a custom lvc as running till they are flat makes them puff etc etc ).
|
all the a123 cells are the same ....... only change the "label" and the built date .......
|
I still like A123's for my high amp applications.

I have heard of cases where cells have exploded but that was on the grapevine so they must have been doing something wrong:neutral: I've sucked the gutz out of the packs I have and they still run strong. |
Lipo's can have the same live cycle of A123's if you don't abuse them and only charge up to 4.1V per cell and don't go below 15-20% capacity. Try abusing lipo like you would with A123's and see what happens. I too have have over 40 cells of A123's and they are still in use.
I have better off the line throttle reponse on my GTP with 4s2p A123's than with a 5000mah 4s1p lipo. Motor used is the Hacker 4000kv C50-L and Tekin RX8. With lower kv motors I don't see a difference unless I start to overgear and A123's come up on top again. On my Ebike I know when I my A123's are at optimum operating temp, when I start to see an increase in my top speed. |
I have turnigy nano-tech packs with 1.5 years and +300 cycles of live ........... and charging the 98% than the first day ........
