outrunner 4060
lookin to do an outrunner in my e-maxx its all about torque so i am going this route any suggestions i found a 40x60mm 1600kv i was going to use 5s
thanks |
Are you planning to run a certain speed out of it?
I mean like just crawl over stuff or you going for 50 mph or anything. |
Sounds like fun. dont forget to post pics

Just curious, but aren't outrunners generally supposed to spin rather slow? 1600kv @ 28.5v is almost 30k rpm; fine for an inrunner, but not sure about an outrunner unless it is specifically designed for those high rpms.
From what I've seen, most people who run outrunners replace the transmission and/or spur&pinion altogether. So, slower rpms work in that case... |
i have been looking around some sites and threads i havent come across anything about to high an rpm not to say there isnt any and i know there have been a few boats around using in the 30k range with outrunners- well the goal here is a trying to keep the amps down and maintain a good bit of wheel speed turning 7" tires in some very deep mud. its geared low 3906 2 speed tranny 76 spur and 14/13/12 pinion, up to 30 sec wot with out burning anything up
|
Ive seen some people hook outrunners directly to the drive shafts. Just need to get the motor shaft protruding on both sides
Im with BrainG i dont think outrunners are meant for those kind of rpms, but wth |
I don't really see the point given it would be used as a direct replacement for a 'standard' in-runner ( in terms of gearing and such )- stick any typical 4 pole motor in the truck and gear it down on 5s lipo & it'll pull tree stumps all day long. There are plenty of guys hoarding 1518 & 1717 motors around here who will probably sell you one, otherwise there are various cheap options about...
Also worth mentioning that the 3906 tranny will be fried instantly with that much BL & lipo power running through it- the plastic gears are no good at all for your plan ( unless you have ~$400-600 for an uber rare set of UltraMaxxed gears which crop up occasionally on ebay )... |
Is this outrunner sealed up?
I remember most outrunners beening equiped with lots of holes and such. Mud in motor sounds bad. Just a thought. |
i have an extra 1520 that was planning on using but its fun to try some new, as far as the tranny i have steel idler gears full metal would be greatbut not gonna happen i have had good luck with the tranny so far there should be a fuse in the driveline anyway

I've raced with some outrunners in my sc trucks before and loved the power they made. They also sound cool, like a jet almost. The only drawback I found was the braking power sucked. No matter what I did I couldn't get enough braking power. Ran mine at 30k+ rpms all day long with no problems. It was fun but an inrunner works better for my applications. To each his own I guess. Just make sure there is nothing near it cause it will destroy anything it touches while the outside case is spinning.
