A CVT for brushless motors...
|
That is very interesting!
I was kind of thinking of some kind of design for a RC too. |
It still must be used with mechanical brakes as far as I can tell. It says it has a "reverse mode", which is not the same as instant reverse/motor braking. Little more than a neat gadget as far as i can tell. Besides....electric motors don't need multiple ratios when properly sized for the application. :)

While I agree with you, I think something like this would have use for those trying to set speed records. Start out with a decent ratio to reduce cogging and amp draw when taking off, and then it increases the ratio for the top speed. Other than that, it's just one more thing to go wrong.

Yes, a top speed car may benefit from this type of thing if it could handle the power - mechanical brakes would still be needed, though.
|
Brakes? Who needs brakes? That's what walls and people's ankles are for!
[EDIT] Actually, in the little chart (right under the picture of the motor with trans attached), it does say "brake" in the operation row. Not too sure what that means given the ad's odd wording about reverse... [EDIT2] After reading a little about CVTs in general and the form factor of this transmission, it seems that this must be either toroidal or the "ball type" (similar to toroidal). Either way, I would question the sturdiness of such a thing, and how it would hold up to BL torque... |
I agree with all of the above! I have spent countless minutes trying to explain to people the instantaneous torque available with electric motors negates the need for a multiple speed transmission, which was invented for an ICE with a peaky powerband.
As soon as spring has sprung I will be doing speed runs with my brushless baja. This is where my first thought about a cvt came to light. On a baja I would imagine more of a drive/driven clutch setup like what is found on snowmobiles. As it is r/c handling and aerodynamics are the limiting factor for top speed runs, not torque, power or lack of a transmission. I guess this whole post is kind of a moot point, I just wanted to share what I found. (while scouring ebay for other needed parts) R/C on brothers! |
You could use it with something like the TCS water cooling system that is/was selling a few years ago...you probably need both if you ran those 150C max amps packs!
