Baja 5SC set up
 

Hey Castle guys, got an XL2 and have a 2028 motor on it's way for repair in the mean time I want to know can I run the Baja on 6s Lipo with something like a Leopard 5692 1000kv or similar?

Only want to gear it for 35-40mph at the absolute maximum

Is a 6s Set up doable or is 8s absolutely essential? I know the issues we had with the MMM running close to the cell count limit and wonder if the same applies to the XLV2

It's not the voltage (6s, 8s) that kills esc's it is amperage. Whether you run 6s or 8s it seems to take about 5000 watts or more to launch a baja that is geared for 50mph, that is just how much power it takes to get it moving.

At 6s (22.2v) 5000 watts is 225 amps (5000/22.2)

At 8s (29.6v) 5000 watts is 169 amps (5000/29.6)

You can see that 8s has the same power, but flows less current(amps).

It is harder on the esc to run lower voltage.

However, since you would be changing the gearing that would lessen the load, making it okay to run 6s.

So, in short, yes you can run 6s if you gear low like you mentioned, but there is no reason not to run 8s and use your esc to it's full potential.

Yeah I understand what you're saying, gearing for say 50-60mph on 6s Lipo would obviously increase the amps significantly, and if I run two packs in parallel I double my capacity, amp load capability and decrease ripple voltage as the load is split over two packs right?

I'd be very interested to see a 1000kv leopard ran on 8s geared for some speed runs. The extra kv over the 2028 makes gearing for high mph easy.

Kinda!:intello: The leopard is more of a 5000 watt motor and the 2028 a 7500 watt motor. But leopards have been geared for 55mph in bajas with no problems.

You could slowly gear up and just watch motor temps to make sure you don't fry it.

Of course that's if you are interested in speed runs. I like to push things to the edge.

Ok well Battery Wise I am thinking a pair of 6000mah 11.1V Hardcase Lipos will do it (40C I think) But they have Deans plugs. Now I know a lot of people say high current, higher current plugs but the pics from the Nuremberg toy fair show HPI with the Baja Brushless and a single deans on the ESC. The Traxxas X01 uses Traxxas connectors (are they any better than deans?) and even the Savage XS which pulls 160-170 Amps on a stock start runs deans with no issues.

My plan was to have 6mm bullets on the ESC, going to a Y Harness with a Castle Pro BEC wired into the ESC plug end of the harness (so it gets 6s voltage) and with a no spark resistor between the + plugs on the esc and the harness (esc side) with the 2 plugs from the harness to batteries being Deans. So I would connect both batteries to the Y Harness (which would then give power to the BEC Pro from the ESC end of the Harness), Connect Negative (6mm Bullet), Connect Resistor (2mm Bullet) and connect Positive (6mm Bullet) in that order.

The ESC would also be running a Castle Cap Pack

Motor wise, either a Castle 2028 (when mine returns) and one of these in the interim
