XRAY XB8R and brushless
Hi all !
I'm new here and for my 1st post i'd like to know 2 or 3 things for my project... I bought a XB8R yesterday on the web and I'm waiting for it during this week. But I'll put a brushless motor on it, not a nitro ! So I'll need to make some changes... I think the total weight of the XB8R will be about ~ 4.2 kg whith 2x6 GP3300 battery pack, motor w/ESC, servo, etc... So which brushless must I put on it and which pinion gear ?? Any advices ? Thanks. |
Welcome!
The ideal motor and ESC for your application depends on how much you can spend. You could go with a Quark Monster 125amp ESC ($280) and a Lehner 1940 motor ($285), or you could use a less expensive setup. |
Thanks for your reply.
Your setup is a little expensive for me. I thought to put a Lehner 3100 on it with a less expensive ESC, but which one ? And about the pinion gear, how much tooth must I choose ? Thanks |
Well the pinion gear will depend on the motor so one step at a time. I wouldnt run a Lehner XL3100 on a buggy. It would get rather hot. I would personally go for a Wanderer 7XL or 8XL depending on what speeds and runtimes you want. Also, I to would recommend the Quark 125 but if its more than you want to spend a Warrior 9920 will do just fine.

The L cans will work as well. I would run like a 10L in it though.
|
And why not a 2in1 solution like the HV-Maxx ?
I can put 1x6 pack cells or 2x6 |
to run a hv maxx on a buggy it is going to be hard to gear it correctly. The hv maxx has a high kv rating.
|
Also, the HV-Maxx has a 1/8" shaft, which would make it prone to breaking. A member here used one in a HV-Maxx, but said that it didn't end up working out too well.
|
HV-Maxx isn't too good. Not very powerful. If you tried a HV, then went to a 10L, you'll be amazed and never want to go back. :P
A few people I know, went for the HV and now have a Wanderer, or other Brushless setup, as the performance isn't really mind boggling. |
The hv has power I would guess closer to a 380 xl motor. I think the 380 I have will out run a hv though. The 10L would be a lot nicer motor.

Thanks
Mike adviced me this choice : warrior 9920 with Feigao 540c 7xl + mod1 12 tooth pinion with 44 tooth kyosho spur. I think it's a good choice and I'll go for it. About servo, I thought to put a Futaba 3305 ? Is it a good choice or must I buy a more powerful servo like the 9350 ? |
Im not sure on the specs on the futaba one you mentioned - but you might wanna get one that has at least 100oz of torque and at least .10 or faster transit time at 6.0v. The hitec 925 is a good alternative to spending a lot of money - if you dont mind hitec servos. If you want the baddest one out there - the hitec 5955 digital servo would be the ticket imho. But that one is more for monster trucks with bigger tires. Just in case you are wondering what the main diff between the digital and analog servos are - the analog has a certain amount of power at a certain spot in the transit - and looses the power slightly when rotating - the digital servo, if it says 120 oz of torque, then it has is from start to finish. Hope this helps ya a little.....

Airtronics 94358z would be good (200oz/.10 sec @6v)or the faster version,94357z (125oz/.07 sec @6v).$109 though.

Ok thanks for your help, last question :
Are there many differences (speed/runtime) between 8xl and 7xl ? |
Can I get an update on this project. I want to covert my Xray XB8R to Brushless and need help deciding what to use. Can I keep both my 7.4v 3200 lipo batteries and run them in series?
