Reason for the 1717 discontinuation?
 
Always been curious about this. Since the 1717 is so popular among heavier 1/8th scale and 1/7th scale stuff, why was it discontinued?

Was it not selling in significant numbers to justify production? Or did Traxxas purchase exclusive rights for the XO-1?

I was wondering the same thing about the 1520....best truggy motor IMO next to the 1717

I seem to remember them saying something about not selling enough when the sale on them started. I can see why because no manufacturer used them in production (at the time) and only more advanced users seemed to know they existed. I know all of my local shops knew nothing of them and didn't seem to want to know either.

I'm not really surprised at the 1717's demise, it's not a bolt in affair for most MT's with stock mounts and truggies usually require spacing the center diff up a tad. I am surprised the 1518 and 1520 didn't take off though. Even though I have nothing to put them in now I feel lucky to have a 1518 and 1520, awesome motors.

I found the 1520 to be too much for my Truggy, but it's a perfect motor for my 15 lbs. Savage.

How much did your truggy weigh in at?

My CRT Pro is currently sitting at 10.8lbs w/2 3S 5000mah batteries and a MMM/1717.

I love the way the 1717 moves it out. I started off with a 16t pinion (the smallest I can actually use, any smaller and the can hits the outdrive on the diff. I actually had to grind a tiny hair off the fins to make it fit with the 16t. I've since moved to a 18th and it doesn't even seem to notice the increase in tooth count. I may step up to a 19 or a 20t and see what happens to the temps.

Top speed is plenty fast enough, and the acceleration to get there instantly is on tap all the time.

But strangely its more controllable than 1515 on 6S was.

It's pretty light, lighter than I thought actually. Serpent Truggy, it weighs in at 6lbs 7oz. with no battery or tires. I currently use a MMM and another discontinued castle motor, 1512 1800kv on 5s Hyperion 4200mah 45c pack and it rocks. I think the 1520 was to much and got too hot in the Truggy because it didn't have enough of a load.

That 1512 is another motor I wish they still made, awesome motor.

I agree the 1717 is a nice motor, have one in my converted flux, but as Overdriven stated its not a direct fit and needs modding. But if I may add, the new version of the 1717 should be available as replacement parts for the xo-1, need to check though... can be had at ebay chop shops without warranty I suspect.

The 1515 almost became a standard as it is provided with lots of rc cars/trucks, hence the continuous need for it.

Well its always the quest for more obscene power and speed, hence these motors, how about a 1527 or 2028 in an extended Flux... Always had this project in the back of my mind....

I just subtracted the known weights of my batteries/ESC/motor/tires from my truggies known weight of 10.8lbs.

Assembled sans twin 3S batteries, MMM, 1717, and tires it comes in at 5.65lbs.

Add back in the 1717 and MMM esc and its 3.25kg or 7.18lbs.
