Toasted my 1717
 

Was running my savage recently, and all of a sudden out of nowhere it as if slams the brakes putting it to a front flip and cartwheel. Upon closer inspection, the center diff is not moving. Came back home dismantled the truck and seems the 1717 motor is stuck, i.e. the rotor does not move or rotate. Dismantling the motor, and with some wiggling force managed to get the rotor out.

Seems to me the can is good but the rotor has somehow disintegrated or the fiberglass (dunno if it is fiber glass or other material) just tore and expanded a bit thus causing it to get stuck and come to a sudden halt.

Any explanation of what happened here ?! Note, temps were ok and the rotor is still well magnetized. Was running on 6S with a XL2.

Would I be able to find a new rotor? and if yes where?

Will the XO-1 rotor fit? and is there a repair kit yet for the XO-1 motor?

OUCH! how are your bearing? Could they have caused this?

The rotors are kevlar wrapped. The rotor broke and the kevlar didn't hold it.

The can is likely good, but there are no repair kits available.

Basically it is a lost cause.

And no Kcaz25, bad bearings don't break rotors, it's the opposite actually. They gotta be spinning real good for the centrifugal force to split them.

Kcaz25, actually just last month changed my bearings.

Although I do agree with _paralyzed_, though if the bearings are bad the kevlar could be rubbing to the internals of the can and get compromised.


These magnets are really strong, gotta get some use of them :oops:

Best bet may be to call castle and see if they can repair it for a good price?

I actually think a bearing could cause this.

Excess vibration from bad bearing or misalignment could cause the rotor to fail.

Or shock damage when you removed the rotor could have damaged it.

This could have been self inflicted with you changing the bearings.

My castle 1717 (from the castle sale a few yeears ago) let go about 2 weeks ago. One of the windings "broke" leaving me with a useless can but a rotor which should still be useable. I have already replaced the castle 1717 with a leopard 4092, so i do not intend to fix it anymore. You can find a new xo1 rotor on ebay. If you are interested in a used rotor for less than half the price of the new one shoot me a PM.

If I recall, the new xo-1 rotor is not the same as the original 1717 - I'm not sure it will work.

You are correct although I was very careful and did not have to remove the rotor out, just the front and end caps and replaced the bearings. Although you never know....

A RC Dude, don't think castle still have rotor for these motors anymore, and as brian015 pointed out the XO motor is different. A good price used rotor is my best bet (thanks to othello)

othello, pm sent. And on the subject of motors, how is the 4092 fairing out? similar to the 1717, more powerful or less?

Or would an XO 1717 motor be a better replacement? a 5692 would be much sweeter:mdr:

I like the way the xo-1 1717 drives my Hummer - plenty of power for a 20 lb truck. I haven't had time to really test in enough to compare it to my previous 1527-powered truck, but it definitely gets the job done.

I'd go with the 1717 over the 4092 (the 1717 is bigger overall, I believe). Would the 5692 fit in your truck?

Thanks for the info Brian015, I'll take your advise and go with the XO 1717. The 5692 does need some modding to get in the truck, will keep that or the 2028 for another upcoming project, the 2028 is just around 10mm longer than the 5692.

I would like a 1527 or 1530, but cost wise the XO 1717 is a more cost effective option.

Have gathered some info here and there for motor wattage, not quite accurate but gives an idea:

The 1515 1250W (2500w surge)
The 1518 1500W (3000W surge)
The 1520 1750W (3500W surge) 1521 same 1520 1521 is a Neu model, vs the 1520 NeuCastle version
The 1717 2000W (4000w surge) 45k limit
The 1527 2250W (4500W surge)
The 1530 2500W (5000W surge)
The 2028 .............?

Still to early to compare the 1717 to the leopard 4092. It weighs around 100gr less, so one can assume it might heat up quicker. A run with an eagletree logger should offer more insight.

Thought to update, Got the rotor from othello, using my can I installed the rotor and the motor spinned nicely. The only concern I have is that when you hold it in your hand and raise the rpm you feel a slight vibration. My thinking during handling of the rotor some balance weights (i think these pads of epoxy went off). Need to find a way to balance it.

If it were my motor I would simply contact CC and ask them to run a check on the motor and ask for assistance getting it back to like new condition for a price.

You could always buy one off of me. I have 3 brand new ones.
