LST2 speed issue (help)
I have a LST2 with a locked rear diff that continues to walk the rear end out at better than 1/2 throttle on 6s. With it doing this it is impossible to get a solid speed run in. Any suggestions to reel this thing in besides less power. Thanks.

Unlock the rear diff... you need some diff action to get traction!

Are your tires taped and balanced? I would also unluck the diff. If one tire grows more than the other and the diff is locked the truck will walk sideways.

Wheels came assembled and glued. They are Deltaplastik 1/5 scale touring car wheels. Also what would be the suggested diff oil weight?

Since the tires are not taped hey will be growing. And likely rip off the wheels at some point. I did some testing back in the day with taped and balanced wheels and the difference is incredible. Much more stable and easy to drive at high speeds.

Thanks and yeah the balloon a good bit. I would mot have though a touring car wheel would stretch out like that but they probably haven't been used like this either. Once these eventually go I will replace them with GRPs.

No prob, I went thru similar issues and found that taping the tires and then balancing the wheel/tire assembly made a huge improvement.
I did a test with an erevo, left the front and rear of one side stock and balanced the other side front and rear after taping the tires. I used beadlocks on the test, but subsequently used regular wheels and glue. It was amazing to see the non taped/balanced side actually moving the suspension at 50mph. The taped/balanced side did not grow the tire (due to the taping) and was visually very smooth. I then did the other side and the difference was amazing. An employee who liked to watch me run the truck commented that I must of lowered the speed on the truck after do the taping/balancing. I asked him why and he said that the truck looked slower because it did not bounce around as much or look so "squirrely". It just ran down the street and tracked straight. I did radar the truck before and after and the truck was slightly faster with the taped/balanced tires. Even though the tires were not "growing" in diameter as much (they looked like pizza cutters before!) the truck went slightly faster. I put that down to the wheels must have been so out of balance that the tires were leaving the ground and thus the truck was not able to put down the power at full speed. Or maybe I could just get a better, longer speed run due to the increase in controllability. Either way I always balance any preassembled wheels, and tape/balance any that I assemble. |
I have tried my hand at balancing but I don't have a balancing jig. I was using a spare axle and knuckle to hold the wheel in place but it is not smooth enough to let the wheel freely spin and come to a rest on the heavy side. Still working on that. What do you use as weight?

Be careful with conversing with lincpimp. He very easily develops man crushes and becomes infatuated. I'm still seeing a therapist over some of the disturbing pictures he sent me of himself.
Hit up any local tire shop and ask for some of their stick on lead wheel weights. They are easily trimmed small enough for our use. Small unbalances can be corrected with a gob of JB weld. IMO the best tires for speed runs on a truck that size would be the BRP's for hpi bajas. |
Losi makes balancing clay... but I like the self adhesive lead tape... "swing weight" tape at golf shops.

I tore the diff down and cleaned out all the hot glue. I will pick up some diff oil tomorrow and get everything put back together. I've clocked it at 53mph but mid 70's is where I am sure it will run.

The saying is those that can't play, coach. I say, why buy when I can build. I needed a way of balancing my wheels so I built my own wheel balancing rig. Functions perfectly and I hope to get all 4 wheels balanced tomorrow.

Here is my wheel balancer. Using some spare parts from a DM1 roller and some 2x4 I had lying around...I built this. Not much to look at but works great and the best part...is was free. That is a win win.
