power source for the esc fan?
 

hi guys need advise , do i need a 9 volt battery to power up my fan or can i just hook up the wires on the esc to get it from the batts? thanks for all your help, mgm 16024 with 4s lipo and hacker 9xl motor set up

what type of fan are you planning on using? how many volts ?

It depends how you want to do it. You could just use your main batteries to power a standard 12V fan, or you could get a 5V fan that can plug into your receiver, like this one:

You'd need to splice the wires of this with the wires of a receiver connector, though.

i bought the fan from radioshack, i believe it is a 12 volt fan just about the size of the esc, how to hook up the connection to the main batts ( i'm using lipo), through the wire on the esc? so that everytime i hook the batts to the esc, the fan will also be turn on? thanks guys

12v off receiver may be a little weak. It will do really well if you connect directly to the batteries, but it may shorten the life of the fan. I am currently running two 5v off channel 3 and so far it has been perfect.

If you wanta quick and dirty way to reduce the voltage to the fan by a little (1 or 2 volts), then two or three diodes in series of the fan power lead will work. Each diode drops about 0.7v. Fans don't take much current, so standard RadioShack 1A diodes would do. That'll take the 14.4v down to 12 effectively.

Why not just use a 12V regulator from Radio Shack? Using diodes could drop the fan's voltage lower than 12V as the battery's voltage drops during a discharge.

I run mine of the main batteries,(that wakes them up) they seem to last a couple of months before they fall apart..........................wish my diffs lasted that long

Yeah, but if it's only a couple volts higher than 12v I like to use diodes because it's easier. The regulator definitely works, it's just doesn't wire up as nicely as inline diodes - you can solder up 2 or 3 in a row and put heatshrink over it. And yeah, the battery drop will also cause the fan speed to go down, but I'd rather undervolt a fan than overvolt.
