Emoli cells are incredible!
As you may have read in the recent power tools thread, I bought a Milwaukee V28 pack to use the Emoli li-ion cells in it. The pack has 7 cells, and I bought a single 8th cell online so that I would be able to make a 4s2p pack. That would be 14.8V and 6000mah. I first tried out the cells in a 4s1p configuration in the hope that I would have a lightweight battery. In my 9L-powered MT2, the 4s1p pack propelled it to 48 mph according to my gps. My prior batteries were 12 zapped, matched IB3800 cells, which have been able to push the truck to 50.4 mph.
Yesterday I tried out a 4s2p emoli pack for the first time. All I can say is DAMN! These cells are awesome when paralleled together! :027: My MT2 hit 59.6 mph!!! I got an extra 9 mph over my IB3800 cells! And that was from my first try. Unfortunately, my run ended with the truck going into a dry ditch and breaking a front arm and shock, so I didn't get to try again for an even higher speed. Next I'll try the 4s2p emoli pack in my Stampede. The IB3800 cells got my pede up to 54 mph, so I can't wait to see what the emolis will do for it. To summarize: Forget lipos. 59.6mph?!?!? That's a full 2mph faster than my highest speed! You should get a video, this sounds incredible.

I'll get some video after I get the truck fixed. Here's a few pics of the truck and a pic of a 1s2p emoli pack next to a normal stick pack. You can see in the 2nd pic how the front left shock cap has popped off the shock.

This is exactly what I've been waiting to hear. I will be buying 2 Emoli packs today and building a 5s2p pack for my 8th scale soon so I'll have 4 cells left over if anyone is interested.
How is heat with these cells? I would imagine it wouldn't be too hot in a 2p configuration. |
How would more cells in parrelel make it faster? I'm intrested in these, so more capacity and weight but no increase in voltage made your truck 9mph quicker, or were you using something else before?
Also, have you tried lipos? You say go Emolli instead, wondering how they compare to the Lipos out there! :) |
More cells in parallel will allow higher speeds because the voltage drop at high amp draws will be reduced especially with the emoli lion cells because their rated discharge rate isn't as high as the current the motors are pulling.

Do you know the weight of a 4 cell pack?
They certainly fit with your truck's layout better than lipos would,they could be very handy in that respect for conversions, since you can build packs different shapes. |
I was curious to if the lipo and li ion is much difference.
If the lipo worries you. You could get some LIMN. They supposed to be safer or more tolerant to the charging voltage. |
Yes, it is two packs of 2s2p. Sorry for the confussion. Each pack weighs 430 grams.

This morning I accidentally proved why I wanted the safety of li-ion instead of lipos. I was doing a top speed run with my Stampede and had the batteries strapped to the top of the chassis. They were the highest thing on the truck, because the body posts were ripped up from previous crashes. Anyway, as I was slowly getting up to top speed, I nailed the throttle once I thought that the pede was going fast enough to not wheelie. Unfortunately, I underestimated the power of the emolis, and the truck flipped on it's back and skidded about 50 feet on top of one of the battery packs!!! I ran to the truck, and the gps said that it was going 44 mph when it flipped! The truck has enough power to wheelie onto its lid even with a swami bar at 44 mph!!! I managed to scratch up the controller, too. Here's what the battery looks like now.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't a lipo catch fire if subjected to such abuse? The batteries weren't hot, so I figured they were still ok. I strapped them under the chassis this time and tried again. I was very careful with the throttle and managed a top speed of 57.7 mph. I was expecting over 60 mph, but I think the drivetrain gears may not be meshing well at such high speeds, because the truck was lurching a little bit. |
