bk20120

Hi, I am hooking up my bk120 amp controller and have a quick question on the battery hookup. The controller has 2 pair of wires for power. I am looking for long run times but will eventually change the setup so I want to wire it right.

What do you guys do. 2 deans plugs, or just 1 for both sets of wires.

My current setup will be
14.4 volts and a 10XL. I will eventually change to lipos for power and go 5s or 6s

PS what do you think the run times will be. 3300 MAH 14.4 volt

solder the + wires to each other and the - wires to each other. then solder one deans male on. then you need to make a harness to run the packs in series. do a search on the "12020 control" or "wiring series" and there are a few pictures of the harness. hope this helps. i havn't used nimh, but should be around 10-15 minutes. i'm sure someone else will post a more accurate time.

I think your time will be around 20+ minutes. Also, to have a lower resistance, don't make a Y harness to connect to a single Deans. Use 2 on the controller. that would be the 2 + wires together to #1 male Deans plug (positive side) and the 2 - wires together to #2 male Deans plug (negative side) and then make a jumper wire from the negative of #1 to the positive of #2. Search around and theres a few diagrams and a picture or 2.

Thanks, I was just unsure if deans would handle it. The wire on the 120 is very heavy gauge.

PS.
I think I will put 2 Deans on the ESC I already have a series deans setup I use for my RC planes. I run 6s on my largest plane

i mentioned the harness because you said that you were going with a different setup in the future.

harness

I am going to do something different in the future. Probably Lipos 5s. I can just have a 3s and a 2s pack and use it like I set it up. I already have test run it. I think I need to figure a few things out yet.

1) Battery temp was 110, Motor was 130, ESC was 110. Does that sound about right. I did not think I was pushing it that hard.

2) I was suprised to see that it ran about the same as the stock setup. I thought it would be slower, Since I got a 10xl and am only running 12 cells.

3) I built the quickest easiest block off plate ever. Here is what I did.
Got a colored (Purple) disposable platic cup from (Acme 50 pack) cut the bottom out and hot clue sealed the edge, Stick on motor plate. Looks good and should be dirt proof.

4) Throttle response is good. The brake was to strong. I flipped it a few times rear over the front :)

Next better mounting for the gear. Program the ESC for the xmitter.

Just wait till you go to 14 cells...

I had the same problem so I set the EPA for the reverse to 65%. That stopped the forward flips on braking and made reverse a little more controllable yet still had good braking.

I might be geared to high for 14 cells, As it is I do not even wheelie in Highgear. It will in low gear thus I am thinking that I should just leave it in Low and remove the servo.

The spur is the stock e-maxx and the pinion is a 21 Tooth. Largest I could buy. Thought I would need it since I was starting with 12 cells. I did buy a second smaller pinion, I think it was a 18 tooth, but it might have been a 16.

What temp should I keep the Motor Under?

160 is as hot as I would EVER let it get. It should be around 110ish. I run 20/51 in second gear on 14 cells in my E-Revo.

Hmmm,
Maybe I will need to add a fan/heatsink to it. I hope that it is not the motor that I got. I had ordered a package deal with a Wanderer, But the motor I got was Blue so I am assuming it is a Nemesis, I was to lazy to say anything about it thinking I was just going to use it for bashing and it was not worth the trouble sending it back. Was that a mistake?

Both my Wanderers are blue (8XL and 10XL).

squeeforever 06.18.2006 06:04 PM

Yup, Wanderers are a light blue. The Nemesis are usually a darker blue and the Feigao are purple.

highflier 06.18.2006 08:32 PM

Good.

I assumed that it was the wrong motor since it did not look like the pics on the web site. Mike, you should update your web site to show blue wanderer's.

I just got down with a real run. I mounted things better, Installed a UBEC.

It was faster then the stock one. That suprised me, The one thing I forgot to mention (Idiot that I am) was that I replaced the wheels with much larger wheels from day one. they are 8"' wheels.

I left it in low gear most of the time. Even then it was faster then stock, Just slightly. The few times I put it into High gear I could not get up to full speed since My yard is fenced in.

Here is what I ended up with

Low gear fairly steady running, start, stop laps.
100 degree Battery
105 degree ESC
120 Motor

After shifting to High gear for 2 minutes and pushing it hard.
106 battery
112 ESC
140 Motor.

I think if I put a heatsink on the motor I will be pretty good. Since I am not racing, I will spend most of the time in low gear. That assumes that I do not just remove second all togeather.

I am charging the batteries now to see how much I used up. But I was running about 10-15 minutes. My wife and I just use them to entertain ourselfs when we go for walks. We walk in the park woods, Thus the larger tires, Need to get over branches and rocks :027:

PS. It seems that the motor was cooler this past run then the first run, I will have to assume it was... Ubec, or I programed the ESC for forward reverse, First time I ran it without programming it and it had no reverse.
No that I programed it Brakes for just about right, Maybe even a little week expecially in High gear.

You might want to check....The pictures are of blue Wanderer's...
