Heat issues :(
I'm looking for some suggestions.
All my brushless gear seems to be getting extremely hot - both motors and ESC. I had the Lehner 5300 installed in my XXXS G+, after about a 15 minute run on 7 cells, both the motor and controller were too hot to touch. Same deal on the T3. What should i be looking at in terms of gearing for the 5300 - like in terms of an equivalent brushed motor? I have it geared for at the ratio recommended for a 14 turn brushed...is that too low? Everything is meshed properly, transmissions running smoothly, freely and quietly - i cant think of what the problem can be, except gearing. How low does this thing need to be geared? Am i too low? Too high? |
Can you experiment with gearing? You could try going up two teeth, and then down two.

I just tried that with the 6S.
Tried 14, 16, and 18, and on every attempt it got quite hot within about 5 minutes. There was absolutely zero cogging on any of the ratios (which sounds on the low side of about right), but then both the controller and motor got very hot, indicating that it could be overgeared... |
Do you have a temp gun? It may feel hot but be in the safe region.
A few teeth can mean from being safe or frying the motor. |
Nope, but i couldn't hold my hand on it for more than about 5 seconds - too hot for my liking.
I'm going to pick up one of those big packs of assorted pinions. That combined with a 90 tooth spur will give me a whole bunch of ratios to choose from. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=110001477602 |
If you can hold your hand on it for more than 3 it is not to bad. Just remember 120f is to hot to hold but is safe for a motor.
|
Oh i thought it was hotter than that...
thats good new then lol. Still, i'll do some more experimenting. It seems like a lot of energy to be wasting... |
Just yesterday I was able to hold my fingers/hand indefinitely on a battery that was 130 deg. However, I do have a lot of calluses from bike riding, so that would do that. The best thing to do just to be sure is to get a temp gun. I use the Duratrax one.
