NOVAK SS5800 system

I'm considering the NOVAK SS5800 system for my RC10T4. Smooth running is EXTREAMLY important to me on this system. It's for play only, no real racing. Some people have told me to get the UForce-75 and a pletty motor. I'm told that this combination is very smooth as well. What are your suggestions? As to the ss5800 system. Tower has it at $219 Tower Hobbies , can you match that? I'd rather buy from you even if the answer is no. PS: Any word on my Micro/9L setup yet? |
I have a SS5800 for my rusty still in a box waiting for spring but am chosing to sell it. I am going with the MGM 80 and Lehner 4200 instead for more power. If I understand correctly the SS5800 is like the HV is in comparision to other brushless motors out there.

The ss5800 is a smooth system. I have had one for a while and I actually like it a lot. It isn't the powerhouse that some of the other systems are, but it is smooth. On 7 cells, it will be plenty powerful. the u-force/plett combos are extremely nice and smooth as well, but cost 3 times as much. the MGM controllers with a lehner basic motor is proving itself to be one of my favorite setup for the smaller trucks (1/10 scale). The controller is very smooth.
I am still waiting for the work from BK on your controller. I told you about the second one, but I am thinking it may be a programming parameter or something. Easter in Germany is a big holiday, so the controller sat in customs for a few days. They have it in their possession now and I would expect to know something at the beginning of the week (Monday/Tuesday). If I don't have the answer, I will wire up the 18150, attach a heat sink/clamp and send it your way (along with your soldering iron). |

I don't know if it is so much a programming "issue" as it is a standard programming parameter based on the expected use of the controller. It comes from the factory in "safe start" mode, which limits the rpms to 20000. It is expected that this controller will be used on very high cell counts with slow turning motors. This is the problem on the 9L, as it gets to 20000 rpms in no time. I am trying to get some clarification on the 42000 rpm limit as well. I was under the impression that this limit was under the rated load (150 amps plus over 42000 rpms = big stress on the controller). I thought the rpms were good to 100k just like the rest when the amp/cell count limis weren't being pushed, but I am trying to find out once and for all. I had the 30150 running exceptionally well on 12 cells (very smooth), but when I jumped the cell count, the takeoff was not acceptable, so I am waiting for word from BK. The next controller you get from me will work perfectly (I have made this promise to myself), and I will test throughly before I send it to you.

The Novak should bring your T4 to the low 30s on 6 cells and mid to upper 30s on 7 cells (assuming good cells). It isn't a slouch, just not as powerful as some others. It is probably a great setup for your application (community truck).

Is stock gearing okay with this setup? |
They recommend gearing like a stock motor on most trucks (18 or 20 tooth pinion on most trucks).

You'll be happy with that setup. I run the 5800 in a rusty and its mighty quick. I'm very please. With 7 cells and the money I paid for it I can ask anything more.
But i'm a speed mahcine so I might go with Lehner later on. |
novak ss5800 in a t4 with 7 cells and 23/87 gearing.. Mike, what would be your guess on speed. i have posted some test stand speeds that were recorded with an eagletree system that seems to be getting alot of doubt. what would you think a highly modded t4 would pull onroad?

i think you are going to have a problem thermaling with that gearing. you should be running an 18-19 tooth pinion with an 87 spur according to novak with your t4. http://www.teamnovak.com/Download/ac...pecgearing.pdf
